Plus he was willing to put together things others won't consider. How many formats did he add just because somebody asked?

3x4. I asked. (I am sure others did too) John made you feel like he did it for you.

I really liked those plastic film canisters that came with the 120 J&C 100 film - bought a bunch of them - didn't really care for the film but at the price it was like paying for the canister and getting the film for free. I have not seen the "J&C100" type film pop up anywhere else - maybe it is beings sold only in China now? I did receive some 4x5 film that was too large and he sent new film at no charge and let me keep the old stuff - Good service.

Running low on 7X11, 6.5X8.5, and 3.25X4.25 so I went to Freestyle's site to get some. OOPS! S**t! Now what do I do?

If J&C is really gone for good, it would be time for someone else to explore the opportunity here to provide these goods not available easily elsewhere. Several film manufacturers would provide these obscure sizes for a minimum order, which would be too much film for one person, but not too much for a stocking dealer..I would think.

I guess these posts reafirm, at least for me, the niche concept. They may be, I don't think many would consider 3x4, 7x11, 6.5x8.5, or 3.25x4.25 mainstream.

Now if I used these formats I know it would be near impossible to find a replacement.

Plus, it is the rare post that didn't like the customer service John provided.

I still think there are two basic opinions concerning the demise of J&C, the gee where am I going to get this stuff now, and the dang I hate to lose the great customer service but 120 tri-x/HP-5 in 4x5 isn't that hard to find group.

John's shop started in Kansas, if he reopens I'd buy tri-x and Hp-5 from him again for the customer service.

Mike

Mike, you hit the nail on the head. John's approach to customer service was top notch. I did buy "normal" film from him. I also liked the variety of European chemistry he sold, like A49 developer. Ahh well. If he does re-open a small shop. I'll drive out there from Missouri.....

You should be able to get most of the East European items that J&C sold like the 120 film canisters from fotoimpex.de. If you can't find it on their website, e-mail Mirko, and he can usually arrange it.

Start a company that imports and sells photographic materials.

J&C Old Orders

I've been waiting patiently for over a year for an odd size order of TMY(8"X16"). Michael Kadillck had tried to get some info on these orders and it seems they are still valid, but I've had no contact from J&C directly. I've made a substantial investment that seems lost.Is there any way or anyone who can shed some light on this. If this company is out of business,I can't see anyway I'll ever see this film.

We have been actively working behind the scenes with Kodak getting ready for the next edition of TMY. John will hear any day now of the date that he will have 20x24 and 16x20 in stock ready to sell so get ready to buy some sheet film. Late July or early August at the latest is my guess. It will be offered on a first come first serve basis and based upon what John has shared with me he is expecting to clear up any outstanding orders that have been in limbo so he should be in touch with you and others very soon.

Quite honestly Chip for the unique request you have probably the best way to get you covered since I know of nobody else that shoots 8x16" would be to purchase some 8x20 TMY when it becomes available and trim 4" off of the end. A Roto trim is all you need and the infrared monocle that I use for DBI has another application for this task if you have them or know anyone that has if you do not. After the 20x24 and 16x20 order John will be doing two formats of TMY at 2-3 month intervals well into 2008. 7x17 and 11x14 were big sellers last time followed by 8x20 and 12x20 so that may very well be the forward sequence.

Cheers!

Michael,

This is most excellent news. Any chance of getting some 14x17 TMY? It is my next format (have the holders and lenses, working on the camera). I have some 14x17 FP4+ from the last Ilford order, but I'd REALLY like the extra speed of TMY in this size. I know of a couple other 14x17 shooters who are likely looking for some film. I'd be happy to ask around and try to get commitments from others to see if we can guarantee John enough sales in this size to make it worth the effort to cut it.

Thanks,
Kerry

wow - i just received the news jandc is gone. another dark day for traditional photo supplies.

Why so, everything he was selling was product bought from a retail store in Berlin and then he re-sold them here.

I get everything I need from Freestyle, especially the Efke films and Fotokemika papers, plus Rodinal, and they can special order just about
anything you want.

Plus I prefer their return policy and knowledgeable staff (not just order-takers at some 800#).

Just my 2¢.

That is OK. I like John as a person, and that is always been good enough for me. I just don't shoot enough B&W to have been much help for him or his business.

Really? This is indeed good news. Can you please provide the name and contact number of this retail store in Berlin so I can order some 7x17 and 14x17 TMAX 400? I'd really like to get some, but I had been under the impression that J&C was the only source of TMAX 400 in ULF sizes.

I get everything I need from Freestyle, especially the Efke films and Fotokemika papers, plus Rodinal, and they can special order just about anything you want.

Well, just about anything you want - as long as it's not TMAX 400 in ULF sizes.

Plus I prefer their return policy and knowledgeable staff (not just order-takers at some 800#).

Nothing against Freestyle, but their return policy and knowledge of the staff are irrelevant if they can't supply the products I want and need.

Perhaps you could give us the order parts number for 3.25x4.25 Efke 25? Or a suitable substitution? Or Classic200 3.25x4.25 at $9.00 for 25 sheets? We know Freestyle doesn't carry it.

Ya just don't get it RollieJoe.

hi rolleijoe - i work at a small photo supply store and jandc supplied us with films freestyle doesn't carry. if you know of a source for 620 and 127 (except efke) b&w and color film, please let me know. i've been selling photo supplies for over 21 years and in the last 7 years to current day a lot of products are just gone without any real warning. so when a traditional supply place like jandc goes out of business it makes me very sad.

that maybe very true but for us they were our link to that retail store in berlin. as for now, we don't have or know of another. once again there's less we can offer our customers in terms of traditional photo products.

I don't wish to get caught in the crossfire here, but some points of information:

1) If you go to J & C website, it seems John has started a new business concentrating on large format materials

2) Classic 200 film - unfortunately it will be difficult now to get this from anyone as it was made by Forte in Hungary and their factory closed a few months ago.

3) 127 film - you can get Maco ISO 200 colour print film from various dealers including Retro Photographic in the UK. You can get an ISO 160 colour print film from The Frugal Photographer in Canada. They say a colour slide film is on its way. There is a new Efke infrared emulsion in 127 size from Freestyle in the US. Not bad for a format that effectively disappeared from use in new cameras about 40 years ago!

4) 620 film - sometimes dealers have respooled Fuji & other colour print films in this size. Try Retro Photographic in the UK, they usually have something.

cool - thanks for the info brac
and there's no crossfire :D just friendly conversation as usual:wink:
