I have been buying supplies from J&C for a while and they seem to have vanished. what has happened. Then I heard they were moving to Las Vegas and then they were quitting due to suits..... suits in photography? any one know the real scoop here? I always had good service from them..... thanks

J&C has gone out of business - search the forums here there's a couple of threads on it.

There is some conjecture as to the lawsuits (who and what for) but of course, being lawsuits, the plaintiffs can't talk about it.

Either way JandC is gone for good. They will be sorely missed. I ordered from them quite a bit from the beginning. At least we have other suppliers in the U.S. for Efke/Foma films and paper.

Not to soon...

I expect that John will re-surface after he incorporates another company very soon as a specialty seller of big name B&W ULF sheet films.

Cheers!

That would be a most excellent development.

Meanwhile, MPEX has that Dead Link Removed that just says "film products" and inside it says stay tuned ?? Is Jim Andracki going to fill the gap? Anyone got an inside line?

Especially if ULF incorporates 3.25x4.25.

The way things seem to be going, it won't be long before 35mm becomes a "specialty" item!

Jim,
Thanks for the heads up on MPEX. I had not kept up with their site because I have never ordered film from them. It is very interesting to say the least.

Jim

35mm is a specialty item for me. - A good 35mm SLR packs as big as a MF SLR and bigger than a MF TLR. The neg will not ever print as nice as a MF neg- so that leaves - family snapshots - the kind that go to the lab and will never be larger than 4x6. There is this new technology that does a better job with this kind of application .... a cell phone?

Actually, there are a number of us here who use and enjoy 35mm format for at least some of our work.

Frankly, a comment such as yours is both incorrect and unnecessarily hostile. As a point in fact to the OT, the old J and C sold lots of 35mm film. I know this - I bought a bunch from them last autumn during their clearance sale. And I also know that my Nikon F3 is considerably smaller and easier to manipulate than my Hassey 503Cw.

No offense intended - this was MY rationale for parking my cameras that use cute little film. It was not a quick or easy decision. There was the whole Contax - zeiss glass phase and the TechPan phase and anything I could do to make a 35mm neg do what I wanted it to do. What I want needs a bigger negative. I did have some success and did make some decent photos with 35mm - even some decent enlargements - but I get greater success from larger formats and found the inconvenience less than I anticipated. So if you received my comments as hostile - I apologize.

Used them once, they botched the order, never got through to anyone in charge to correct the situation. I get everything I need from FREESTYLE.

Ehrr, the thread is about J&C Photo.

Just making sure before I go off half cocked as I am wont to do.

John has done more for our community than 100 German Rollie dudes ever will. My 3x4 cameras would be sitting gathering dust if it wasn't for J&C. Not to mention the renewed interest in ULF and strange roll film sizes.

Not arguing with that, Tim. I love what J&C did for us film & chemistry photographers. I thought the comment was unnecessary too.

And 2 1/4 by 3 1/4.

I was really getting into the different brands and if it wasn't for JandC I wouldn't have bought the classic Busch 23 camera, which I have never regretted. It was a dream come true seeing all of the types and sizes of films, papers, chemicals and other odd items. For me it was a dynamic rebirth of photography that has not stopped since.

Just reading the posts about J&C it looks like there are two groups. If you are in a niche you're sorry to see them go and worry about future supplies.

The other group is sorry to see someone go out of business, but if their film usage is pretty mainstream 35mm, 120mm, or 4x5, their needs can be filled by several different vendors.

John provided a good service and I wish him well, but losing a vendor isn't like losing a manufacturer.

In this case, it's pretty close. John's selection was not matched anywhere, not even in Germany. 3x4 ADOX25 is pretty hard (read impossible) to get now.
