J&C 400 Classic is ??? Efke??

Being a charter member of Steve Simmons "film of the month" club, I managed to own some J&C classic 8x10. It does not like processing in anything but Rodinal, and that at 25:1.

It has the all too familiar half circle notch, which Efke uses on everything but train schedules, I suspect. Every Efke offering I have ever seen is marked the same, even their IR film.

Logical conclusion: J& C 400 is Efke? was not aware that Efke made a 400 speed film, but on further look, this aint no 400 speeder anyway. Lucky to get 100 out of it.

In my files I listed them as Forte due to identical datasheets. Though, it might be we are talkingabout different films.

Fotoimpex who supplied J&C sell Forte 200 & 400 as Classic Pan.

Forte use the same notches as Adox/EFKE, and EFKE don't make a 400 ISO film, however J&C sold some Chinese film as well under various names. Your film isn't EFKE.

I asked J&C about the J&C Pro 100 8x10 film I purchased. They specifically said it was chinese, and that's why they could sell so cheap. Even so, I found it to be okay for cheap film. Though, the 400 may be of different origin.

I have a box of that stuff. It says Adox on a small label on the bottom. I developed it in either Pyrocat or ABC Pyro.

Yeah, that would be Fortepan 400. I had a box of that and really liked the stuff. Then when I wanted to get more is when J&C started having huge problems stocking both the 200 and the 400.
If there's any stock left somewhere, it's very nice film that responds very well to Pyro developers. Like the OP says, however, Rodinal was excellent too. I think the film was really sharp. Attached is an 11x14 print from a 4x5 neg of the J&C 400. If you can't get more, the Foma 200 & 400 emulsions are really nice too and along the same lines.

J&C Pro was a different film from the J&C Classic Pan. Classic Pan is/was Forte pan.

JandC 400 Sheetfilm

The film is identical to our Classipan 400 and was not coated at Efke´s.
We used several different converting places in order to manufacture this film.
This specific batch might have been converted at Efke´s because Forte (the manufacturer of the Classic raw film) was behind shedule in converting at one point.

The film does not achieve 400 ASA in certain developers. In most developers with good speed utilisation I would rate it at 260 ASA true speed. In case of Rodinal, diluted above 1+25 I´d say 200 or even less.

It features a very nice tonality, has an unique grain and is very sharp.

Most people either hated or loved this film.

We still have stock of 35mm, 120 rollfilms, 4x5" and 5x7".

Yes. That was exactly my experience with Classic Pan 400...
Beautiful tonailty, unique grain, unique spectral response and, yes...
I both loved it and hated it.
I hated it at first but grew to love it. It did take me some time to get the hang of developing it.

Would love to get some more - especially in 5x7 but shipping costs seem prohibitive.

I have 500 sheets 8x10 of J&C 100 Pro in my freezer for testing and learning purposes. I developed some in Xtol and Pyrocat-HD.

Some people were complaining about micro holes and coating, so far nothing in my batch. As far As from where it's coming from, well, the response was it's from China and it is not the same as J&C Classic paper.

IMO, I like it. It's very good film for the price I purchased. You can get a very good dense negs if you develop in HD.

I have used J&C Pro 100 8x10. The envelope inside was red, and it had Chinese characters on the tab. It was a good film for the price.

I have the JandC 400 combing out my ears. I bought it in about all formats. I just shot a dozen sheets and I used an EI of 200, now for the developer choice. I am not going nuts with a lot of tests because when it's gone it gone. Maybe some Rodinal, I have a couple of cases, or Pyro HD?

Now if I can get some Ilford Pan F in sheets then I will spend a considerable amount getting it discovered. For now it's Kodak and others.

Yes. Classic Pan 400 is lovely in HC-110. Stay with Dil. B or D however because the more dilute mixes make fro awfully big grain.
