OK. I lose track of details, but John Nanian tells me this is the 5th Annual Back to the Beach Party. Whichever number it is, it should be fun (again). I hope any of you who can make it will try extra hard this year to do so. I've changed the day of the week to Sunday, in hopes of getting a few friends who work retail on Saturday to come down this year. Maybe it will inspire you to join us.

We gather as photographers, friends, people who enjoy conversation and food and drink and a nice day near the beach in Waterford, CT. It's very near New London, with its ferries and train connections, and a few miles off Rt 95. Google Map directions are here.

June 28, 2015... all day
Come one, come all and bring the kids!

We will begin at breakfast, but you are welcome any time of the day at the cottage. Pick up at the New London ferry/train station is certainly possible. We bring cameras (all varieties, from half-frame 35 to 11 x 14 have been common so far), portfolios for friendly review and sharing, food, drink, kids, dogs, bathing suits (association beach is a short walk away), bikes..., whatever. Expect nothing in particular to happen but good cheer and perhaps a few photo opportunities. "Low key" is the phrase of the day. There is ample fodder for image making in the immediate area and side trips during the day will certainly occur. Shady lawn and gas grill all day; sandbars, rocks, abandoned sanitarium, beaux arts mansions, boats and lighthouses on demand. We end the day when people go home. Bring food and drink to share if you want...or not. I'll have some beer, soft drinks, wine, etc. and at least one or two pots of communal food/salad. (Papagene's chili has always been a good addition, as has Diane's fish chowder! hint, hint)

More on the actual breakfast site and time soon...

Well, the first one couldn't have been a "back to the beach" so this is the 4th annual BTTB Party. Hope to make it again...

I think of the beach as a sort of primal place, to which we return from time to time... Back to the beach for the first time? Don't know. Good to have you penciling it in, though, Drew.

I think what makes a beach special, beyond being a different environment with different animals, physics, and plants, is that it is a boundary environment. It is the boundary from our later in evolution air breathing environment to, indeed, the more primal one our ancestors flip flopped out of.

A few meters difference and your world changes.

Tomorrow I turn 69. I will get up in the dark, coffee already made on a timer. Will drive ten minutes to Lido Key (Sarasota, FL) with one of my Ricoh XR-P's loaded with Kodak High Definition C-41 ISO 400 film (RIP!). Two lenses, both Ricoh: 28-100, and 70-300. And don't forget the monopod! (Why don't more people know about them?)

While my Florida west coast doesn't have the sunrise possibilities of the east coast, there are still many amazing "decisive moments." And, while I'm as much a sucker for beautiful sunsets, I swear, I do NOT consider them "art." Just pretty pictures.

Yay, looks like we'll be able to come this year. Thought you were planning it for the weekend before, but the 28th, I will be finishing up my MFA residency, we usually complete everything by late morning on the last day, so I might just head straight for the beach afterwards! Mike and the boys would probably get there earlier than me, but it will be fun to see everyone that afternoon and evening!

Now that is a lot of good news; the MFA and your possible attendance at the party. Couldn't be happier! It's just not the same without you guys.

Always room for one, or more to join us. With the cost of jet fuel coming down so rapidly, you'd think the idea of coming from Europe, or even Oz. for a party might catch on, but I guess the airlines have just decided to pocket the difference...

And yes, Drew, there will definitely be a swap table, and lots of give aways. But the same rules apply: If you bring it and nobody takes it, YOU TAKE IT HOME! I sometimes end up with more crap than I came with, and not because I chose it.

I'm looking for a small, very lightweight 90mm lens for 4x5...old is good! (For money, of course)
