How strange. It would be interesting to contact Nikon and find out why they exclude film.

Funny. Both my Nikon cameras reject everything except film.

Ah but there are plenty of tools available (e.g. exiftool)to allow one to write EXIF data, even into scanned files, and make them look like they were produced by any camera you like ...

and you can just as easily strip the exif out of a digital image.

Here's the deal. I think a "photo contest" is a way to get photos for a prize. They don't have to deal with those pesky photographer's fees and usage right. I'm sure if you're lucky or skilled enough to win, you'll surrender ownership when you get your prize and credit for the photo. Read the fine print. Film images don't serve Nikon well so the don't want to waste their time.

So it's settled. We all enter the contest with scans of negs or prints, shrink it down to 1200x1600 (2MP or so), and strip all EXIF data from it so they can't tell how it was taken.
When one of us wins, and they ask for a RAW file for proof, we find the nearest digital camera, take a photo of the negative with a macro lens or neg-dupe bellows setup and send them that.
After we've received our prizes using a fake name and address (and bribing the local postie), we reveal the scam and Nikon get laughed at.
Done.

there is a program that can Strip meta data of digital camera...maybe there is also that can override the metadata after stripping it..I wont be surprise if a film capture win the contest...

Well that does it. I'm buying a Canon for my next digital camera!

I think it's called a "Rights harvesting session":D

I wonder what the odds are of a non-Nikon camera winning Nikon's contest?

We had couple of years ago in my previous company mini photo contest. I made big beautiful fiber based print - all others had some badly made lab prints or home inject prints. When I won - friend from my room (who did not gone into contest) told me that is was not fair - that I used superior techniques . What if I had used wet collodion !?

I just send this at support@entry.nikon-photocontest.com

Hi Nikon,

I was surprised and disappointed when I saw that you stated "We will not be accepting any entries taken on film".

Can I use wet plate collodion process? This is not a film - so I guess this is ok?

In hope to get quick answer, with kind regards,

Darko

Idiots, what are the thinking. I guess if I use my D70 to make a digital copy of a print made with my F I would be OK?

 Awesome!

Does APUG ever do photo contests? If not maybe we ought to have one. Entries would be film based only, obviously.

Yes, but I mean a REAL photo contest with a prize. Everything has to be done with completely analog techniques except that your negative or print could be scanned for submission.

Could generate a lot of interest!

To say a company hates an objectively obsolete format they can't make money by promoting is a bit strong.

We like film (we LOVE film), but to pretend that it is still a relevant medium for anyone involved in the manufacture of hardware is silly.

What if someone won the contest and people started asking "how can I make images like that" and Nikon couldn't sell them anything as a result? This is a publicity stunt to increase sales, not a contest about the free and unfettered expression of the photographic art.

Nikon needs to be able to sell cameras and lenses with this contest (and for those of us with a personal stake in Nikon's continued survival, they NEEEED to), and the kind of person who believes a camera makes your images good and would buy one under the illusion it would turn out prize-winning images by itself has no interest in shooting film.

(inb4 ZOMG FILM IS NOT OBSOLETE; it is. It's not dead and it's still wonderful and I will cry real tears at Tri-X's funeral, but it's the old way, and you can't make money on the old way.)

Why? I am confident enough in my work that I do not need to win prizes and have others going home disappointed. I photograph to please myself and those close to me and I do not need the approval of a group of judges.

I understand, but lets say that somebody goes to Ford saloon and says: "I saw Maserati (or beautiful old timer Mercedes cabriolet) - can you sell me something like this?"

Proper answer would be: no, we can not sell you equipment that will give you this result; this result is made with superior cameras and techniques, with tradition that is more than a century old, and it will cost you more money and more time, and you should have more patience to get the skills needed for this result. If you really want this result - go on APUG, if not - go shoot some instagram - it will make you feel better.

Of course they would fired me the same day :D.

Yes we do and a new one just started: the Monthly Shooting Assignment (MSA). See:
(there was a url link here which no longer exists)

I will never use a japanese camera or japanese car , my next car is a TIR truck from Europe and 1A Leica. 450hp and 4500cc and more comfortable than your best chair and bed in your home. And you can fill it and Istanbul to Scotland and back without refill. People can squeeze in to their toy car.
