This little F5 and 50mm are a nice pair. When I found them, they were shivering, scared, and in need of a good home. I took them in, fed them, gave them their own bed and taught them how to live again. But I think it might be time to send them on to their forever home. They need a big back yard to run free, with an owner who can spend more time with them. I just have to figure out how to bring myself to actually let them go. You can tell by the layer of dust how much use it gets. It’s been sitting on this table untouched, and unmoved for three weeks now.

The COVID crisis has changed the way many of us shoot film due to the restrictions imposed. Once life normalizes, traditionally pandemics last about 18-24 months, you may find yourself using this more.

I’ve thought about that, but I think I enjoy the F2 better. It’s a slower more controlled shooting experience and even when I am shooting 35 I’m never in the kind of situation that dictates the power an F5 gives me. I’ll never shoot a roll at 8fps.

Of the 3 Fs I used as a working PJ, F F2 and F3 I liked the F2 a tad more than the F3, maybe the somewhat larger size. Just put the F5 on C list and start looking for a F2. Nikon make the F2 well after the F3 was introduced, there are lot to chose from. .

I already have an F2. And of the F2, F100, and F5 that I have owned, the F5 saw the least use. I shot the F100 way more than the F5 because it fit in my bag better.

I really liked the f5, one of my favorite 35mm bodies, but once all said and done, I used it like I use my f3, non of the extra features that made it an amazing camera, I utilized. So i ended up selling it. If i need a motor drive, i put one on the f3. The weather sealing is the only thing i miss.

I think it is a shame to get rid of such a damned fine camera. Yes it is a powerhouse but it also is capable of subtlety when needed. I took mine to the Maternity Hospital when my daughter was born and got our first pictures of her with HP5+ and a 50mm F1.4 af D. It was so quiet and discrete that the mothers in neighboring beds hadn't got a clue and hand held shots at 30s f2 were bang in focus and sharp. The extra heft and self adjusting ultra damped shutter and mirror make for easy hand holding at slow speeds. I also have an F100 but the build quality just isn't there in the same way. Plastic back door latch etc..... Ps, prices of these will only go up. I paid £160 for mine and it would cost me nearer £500 to replace.

perfect for bird work. Just need a LOOOOOONG lens on it. Never could stand anything less then a telephoto with a 75mm bottom.

Honestly I'm thinking that if you're letting this camera literally gather dust (why? why not put it away?), then get rid of it.
Stock up on spare doors for your F100.
