Yes, that is separation of lens elements.

Be aware that shipping cameras in unpressurized cargo containers (i.e. on a plane) can cause a lens to separate spontaneously due to pressure differences if the original bond is weak.

I had this happen to a set of very expensive cinema lenses I shipped to China. I lost a lot of money on that transaction, but learned the hard way to pack expensive lenses in a gasket-sealed shipping container or risk losing the value of the lens.

As a seller on very expensive items, I determined that it was worth purchasing a shipping case and folding that into the purchase price, or asking the buyer to send it back as part of the original deal. Most who purchase very expensive lenses won't even blink at the added cost to insure it arrives safely.

ugghhhh. Thank you for your help.. I thought i had a good deal.. I just can't seem to find a reasonable deal on my first leica lens.. I just keep getting bad samples, with promised perfection.. this package came via ground shipping. It also has a lot of haze, but i could have cleaned that.. Now that focal-point is gone, i guess there is no way to get something like this fixed now, unless done yourself. Its a real shame too, as the glass is perfect on this DR, and not even one "cleaning mark"... Thanks for all the help, i guess i have to inform the seller.

The separation may or may not impact the performance of the lens, but that can only be determined by shooting a roll.

Zeiss Icon Contaflex auxiliary lenses are infamous for this issue, but many claim it doesn't radically impact their performance.

If you are shopping for "bargain" Leica lenses, you probably will see this more often than not.

I must not think that my expensive lenses will have develop separation . Was wondering. Are there rules for storing your lenses to prevent this?
My rules is to keep my objectives dry (so store in the living room) and keep out of the sunlight.

Well, the guy said it was in perfect condition optically, but marks on the body of the lens. I spent quite a large sum of money on this, so it wasn't particularly "bargain" price . Just, i'm not a collector, but a shooter, so for me the outside doesn't matter. I just want a good shooting lens. I'll be sending it back, as i certainly didn't pay the price for a lens with seperation. I'm sure the images are fine out of it, but since i normally enlarge 35mm -> 16x20, those little 35mm negs need all the help they can get

I'm actually considering just buying a mint coated sonnar, and a amedeo adapter, as together, that would be the same price as i payed for this lens.. And to mug, I've always heard that the main thing is heat, and pressure differentials. So i just try to keep them cool and dry.

Yes, if you paid a premium price I would certainly return it.

A sealed container with desiccant, kept in a cool and dry place is the best bet.
