orange triangular shape in grass below tree and to viewer's left of subject's right shoulder...
and, why is it orange?

I think it is, because it looks like you have flare in the bottom right corner of the frame, too.

Well it may be, it also may be something dis-coloured in the grass.

I see no flare in this picture.

We did not yet discuss the possibility of being something supernatural.

Aiming a camera halway at the bearing of the sun already gives many chances for flare.

Considering an effective lens shade is the way to go.

Concerning the "artefacts" in this image, only one one of the two can be ghost images due to geometry. For the red patch I thus would look for a different explanation.

That's what I thought too but the very next frame on the roll, taken from a slightly different camera position, is this....

Supernatural!

I think what you're seeing at the bottom right corner is the sidewalk.

You just saved me from admitting my theory being completely unsubstantiated.
Well, then it is the red patch...

As a side note:
This discussion hints at what kind of stepping stones there are in forensic photo analysis...

Ah yes - now that I am on a computer instead of my phone I can see the sidewalk.

I still use a phone that will fit in my pocket, so its screen is small.

On this bigger screen, it just looks like an ant pile to me. Even a small shift in location may have helped the next photo hide the ants behind the grass...

That is not "Flare" it looks like it might be "Fog." As in "Light Struck" film. In B&W it would be gray or white. With color film it can be orange like that. Some other very similar appearing defects occur from static and or bending the film during handling.

Comparing both photos I do not see how something could be hidden. The red patch rather is over the leaves.
For a compression mark it seems too hazy.

Thus I stick to the ghost image theory. Though classic rear fogging is a possibility too.

Just looked at the negatives and the suspicions supernatural orange apparition appears on frame #0.....and I realize that this roll of film changed cameras...twice!

maybe careless handling? (sheepish)

anyway, I think we can safely credit this to the operator.
