Is there a Hasselblad acute matte screen with black cross?

We all know the more popular version of the Acute matte screen with thin etched cross and the Acute matte D with cut out metal edges. However I have this screen with a painted black cross in the middle just like the standard screen, but its quite a lot brighter (but maybe not as bright the the Acute Matte with etched cross).

I wonder if this is an earlier of the Acute matte, or this is a standard screen that has been custom-treated in some way?

How many versions of Acute matte screen are there? Are the screens with the big central spot and grid, and the screen with split image (without microprism) Acute matte?

How many versions? I do not know. I have an Acute Matte D screen with a large plus sign, not a cross but a vertical line and a horizontal line.

Seven (7). And 5 of them have the horizontal and vertical lines you may be describing as a cross.

I believe the screen you described is the Acute-Matte for the 200-series meter pattern.

There were some historical posts about this, which indicated that there were no acute matte screens that have black painted cross hairs, all were scribed/etched. However, I do not recall the accuracy of this information, but I have never seen a genuine acute matte that was not scribed.

I would routinely etch with a knife the vertical and horizontal limits of an 8x10 format on the square screen. Helped me frame to make sure I didn't cut heads or feet off when printed. L

Thats what I thought as well. But this screen I've got is definitely a lot brighter than than standard screen.

1. standard, with vertical and horizontal axis lines
2. with axis lines and 28mm spotmeter area
3. with axis lines and 6mm spotmeter area
4. with axis lines and PME 90/45 meter area
5. with axis lines and microprism and split image rangefinder
6. gridded with split image rangefinder
7. gridded with split image rangefinder and 28/6 mm spotmeter areas

There was a "pre-acute matte" screen called a Bright-Matte (42226), but it was also scribed.

If someone has Richard Nordin's Hasselblad Compendium, you can look it up the screens (and please list them here, I'd like to complete my list!).

Hold up your screen in question to a bright point source of light, if it is an acute matte screen, you will get a prismatic diffusion pattern when viewed though the screen. The plain screen (and most after-market ones) will just be fuzzy. It may be an after market screen (although I've never seen on with painted line, they were always scribed), or someone may have reassemble an old screen with a brighter ground glass component. There also use to be company that would take you old screens and coat them to make them brighter.

It could also be a 3rd party screen like a Beattie Interscreen. These are brighter but have the black paint cross.

Most excellent list! There's also the Acute Matte D currently shipping with the CFV-50c (3042264). Essentially, it's the 42215 (microprism/split image) version with added frame lines for the CFV crop.

I think the 42264 screen was for the CFV (16M square sensor crop):

But there was one for the CFV-39/50 with dual markings for the CFV (16) as well. It was always sold with the back only, and I don't know it's part #. And I'm sure the had a different one for the CFV-50c.


But that does bring up a correction on my previous post - there are Acute Matte D screens with black painted lines!

Note that these screens are 2 layers, the plastic Acute Matte D surface with the microprism/split image and scribed cross hairs, and a glass cover plate (that you can draw on). As Jager indicated, these screen use the 42215 plastic (which is the expensive part to produce) along with a glass layer that has the crop marks painted on.
