Is the Komine/Vivitar 35-70mm 3.5 unusable wide open?

That's what the only review I could find says-it's useless until you get to 5.6. I just bought one NIB cheap, but since I'm frozen in here in NE Ohio I won't be able to try it out for awhile. Thanks
