Most film photographers shoot snapshots just like most digital photographers. (OK. I've ducked.)

We're getting into the weeds. I'll pull this back on course using your comment.

If photographers are using film to take snapshots that would indicate that the film craze still has momentum. Film is viewed as something to be used in every day scenarios. Not a hallowed commodity that needs to slowly doled out for those special moments.

Decades of snapshots and lousy snapshots paid for Kodak, Ansco, et al, to do film research & development and to build manufacturing facilities. Keep those snapshots coming while I continue to take photographs.

I'm doing my part. I never think to conserve film. It's meant to be used!

Interestingly, the smaller the format, the more quickly I go through it. And it is not down to cost because actually 110 is more expensive than 35mm given the # of shots per roll etc

Campy - nothing personal, but I saw your ad, as I was in the market for a Hasselblad body until yesterday, and been watching the market closely for the past few months. I think your price is ok for the kit, maybe a bit on the higher side, since I'm not sure about the CF lens - it should yield more. However, see the link below, a kit sold with just the 80mm CF for more than you ask, and the buyer had to pay taxes on top of that, the total was close to 3k.

On US ebay, a basic 500cm kit that consists of a working body, clean 80mm lens and A12 back, sold recently for anywhere from 1200 to 2700. Reference: https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_fr...+500cm&_sacat=0&rt=nc&LH_Sold=1&LH_Complete=1

There were a few deals on the bodies, that I did not catch, I ended up spending 600 on a body from one of the major used gear retailers with 6 months of warranty.

I agree with the statement that the value is the amount whatever someone is willing to pay, but that amount is influenced by variety of factors. For example, I like ebay's ease of returns, but don't like paying taxes, (also sellers pay 13% fee on the grand total of order incl. tax) so I didn't purchase there. If I were to sell my kit for 1500 on ebay, the buyer would've paid at least 1620, and I would get less than 1250 after all fees. The fees are getting ridiculous. I appreciate websites like photrio, even though I never bought anything here.

Drew - what year was it when you purchased film for $2.50 per roll?

@fpd2 yeah ebay is great for buyers as there is no issue if there is a problem with the product. Even if the seller stated 'all sales final' it doesn't matter if whatever is sold is not as described. So for me paying 'extra' for sales tax is worth it.
But... it totally blows for a seller as the fees that you mentioned are ridiculous.

It took me two months to sell a Fuji digi lens on craigslist. But for me it was worth it as 1. was not in a rush b. did not want to deal w shipping iii. no risk of a return.

The price was less than what I would have sold it for on this site, but if I took into account shipping, about the same.

Sales tax is just part of the cost of doing business. Just like taking in oxygen, nitrogen and CO2 is part of breathing.

.... I have had my 500 C/M for about 3 months and I don't think my price is way high.

I don't know about others but as soon as I read "net to me" in an ad, I'm done.

What if I changed the price to $650 net to me, you wouldn't contact me? I know Sirius would.

Nope. Not interested at any price when the seller says, "net to me". It is very off-putting. Not nice. Basically, it feels like the seller is saying "screw you".

All of which tells me that word choice is really important.
If, instead, the listing said $650.00 plus shipping plus related PayPal fees, it would mean exactly the same, but might it be less off-putting for some?

FWIW, I have always said "I'll bear the PayPal fees" in my listings.

The "plus PayPal fees" is just wrong. I cannot, never have and never will accept that. The fees are explicitly the seller's responsibility.

There are lots of legit ads on the auction site. Lots of fishing expedition ones too, hoping to land a sucker. Read the fine print. Compare the pictures to the description. See if the price is inflated by an unreasonable shipping cost, etc. I also wary of certain countries known for a lot of internet fraud. Generally, I shop with known reputable dealers in Japan, or domestically. But at this point in life, I'm more apt to sell something than buy it.

Additional thought...
Yes, the wording is very important. There is nice way to say essentially the same thing.
Something like , "3% discount for a cash sale" would achieve the same effect but have a completely different feel to it.

This is clearly personal to you and others who feel that way. I don't - I wonder how prevalent your reaction is though.

Lol. I agree that "net to me" seems off-putting, but I usually see a high price preceding the phrase.
The fees are very often pushed onto the customers by businesses, just hidden in the price. Compare UsedPhotoPro prices on their website with their pricing on eBay. Obviously, eBay prices are higher. Their website prices incorporate payment processing fees, whether it's paypal or whatever.
This is useful: https://www.salecalc.com/paypal to adjust the price so that the asked amount is nicer

Sirius - so... you include sales tax when you sell something for cash and then route it to the gov, right?

When I sell stuff I always include all the fees in the price. So people know straight off how much it will cost.

The end result is the same, but the route there is just... so..much... lesssss...ugh.
