Someone once asked if my Pentax 645N was a Bronica or Mamiya.
That's as high up the food chain as I have ever gotten.

My next door neighbor saw me with my 645n on a tripod, right angle finder, focus rail, 120mm macro lens, cable release, the whole thing. She said "Mighty fancy camera, George! Is it a Nikon?" I told her it was a Pentax, she seemed disappointed.

And so it goes.....

I had an interesting one this week - from the xray operator at Canberra Airport while taking my RZ through security in my carry-on bag. The operator thought it was maybe a 'blad (on the xray image) because he himself had a 501C (I think). "Never stop shooting film", he says

i haven' t been asked if i was using a hassy in a good 25 yeras.
but i went through a security check the other day at a boat terminal
and asked if they could hand check my bag because i had film in it
the lady gladly put the camera bag aside and gave it to
a guy who called me over after i went through the scanner ..
he asked " is this your camera bag?"
i said " yup"
he opened the bag and asked what was in the capsules.
i told him " film for my camera " ( and showed him the camera )
and he looked at me kinda weird ....
he had never seen 35mm film before.

Well it wasn't quite the titled question, but I had a warm fuzzy Saturday afternoon. I was walking a bit of the Pine Creek Rail Trail in northern PA, near Cedar Run. I was equipped with my Yashica 124G (and "something else" ). There was an interesting through truss bridge over a tributary that I took some shots of. At the other end there were a number of people off to the side, a 20-ish couple, an older woman with an SLR, and a couple of high school aged kids. The females were all wearing the long print dresses and white gauzy caps that suggests they were Mennonites and the 20-ish couple was the camera target, using the gorgeous mountain scenery as a backdrop; maybe an engagement announcement coming up I would guess.

After I crossed the bridge I turned to take a couple more shots of the trusswork. As I was staring into the WLF, they apparently had finished and started walking up to the trail. Noticing my activity they actually stopped to wait and avoid getting into my shot. As I snapped the shutter, then looked up and smiled, the woman with the camera flashed a smile and asked with a cheery voice "is that a medium format?"

"Yes" I replied.

"Is it hard to get film for that?" (The second standard query.)

So I explained it was a twin lens reflex of circa 1980 vintage, I was shooting B&W and that there is still a fair selection of film available via online shops, just not in the drug stores and locations where it used to be commonly found. They came closer and I explained I also use the newest technology, waving the G15, but have also gotten some 1950s vintage folding cameras to keep me amused since I retired. I mentioned I print, frame and exhibit work in some shows in my area and one of the younger kids asked if I do my own processing. I answered yes and he said "Wow, that's really cool!." They all wished me a good evening as they headed off.

I felt a warm rush and thought of this thread as I wandered off toward my patiently waiting companions.

I was asked this question also, and I do use a Hasselblad. However, many years ago when my only camera was a Practika MTL5B, I was taking photos with it and a tele lens and used a tripod, when some weird guy came to me and asked if I was a reporter from a television transmitter and if he can see himself in the news later in the evening He did not stop walking back and forth in front of my camera just to make sure he 'is recorded' :crazy:

Asked that very question this am at the Columbia Icefields in Jasper. Then asked by the middle-aged lady if she could look through the camera. And then asked why, when she moved the camera to one side and then the other, things were "backwards"? And then asked what film I was shooting (PanF+ at the moment) and where did I buy my film (usually B&H or Adorama in New York). And, then... lol

Yep, yours sure is. That's why it says "Hasselblad" right on the front. Kind of gives it away right there.

I got asked this last weekend at Uvas Canyon County Park while out with the Newton New-Vue.

Then later on up the trail as this same fellow photographer was aiming at some dead trees I asked him if he was shooting New 55...

Boy was my face red, he was shooting TMAX100 Readyloads.

I feel left out. I have still never, ever, been asked if my camera is a Hasselblad. Of course none of mine look remotely like one (probably the M645 Pro is closest) but then neither does a Nue-View.

EDIT: Searched the thread and found that I have been asked, and posted about it in 2012. I'd just forgotten - my then neighbor (since moved away) saw me with the 645 Pro and, as he used to be a wedding photographer, recognized it as a medium format SLR but couldn't really see at that distance. So that hardly counts. Once I was close enough he actually knew 6x4.5 from 6x6 and Mamiya from Hasselblad.
