Is regular old 8mm reversal film available?

I was digging in the basement and found my Mom's old (bought the same year I was born) Kodak Brownie 8mm movie camera and had a thought to try it out. Does anybody sell regular old 8mm film? I see Freestyle has Super 8 and processing on their website, but that wouldn't work, would it?.

DO NOT send your 8mm out through Walmart. I used walmart several times for 8mm processing, but the last roll I sent them, they cut the can open, exposed it, stuck it back in the can and then returned it with a "SERVICE NOT OFFERED" sticker.

Just a few notes: KAHL no longer sells to the general public, he decided it wasn't worth his trouble. Fomapan R100 uses a different reversal process from standard cine reversal film, and not all labs can process it.

Kodak makes this film; 7265 plus-x reversal (Cine-X B&W Regular-8 Reversal). They won't sell it to you. Need to get it from John Schwind or someone else.

Unfortunatly Plux-X reversal is no more, they were selling Tri-X reversal.

Whne the Plux-X WAS available, there was no problem for anyone to order it, as long as you ordered about 20 rolls at a time (400Ft each) The Tri-x has the same sort of Minimum. The reason being that they have to get the Regular 8 Dies out of storage and set up the machine - which no doubt will cause the wastage of a couple of thousand feet of film.

Thanks for the correction. I got a few rolls of Regular-8 from John a few months ago and indeed the Cine-X is no more.

I read that thread. Wouldn't a broker like John Schwind want to be in on a proposition like that, or have his own order. Isn't that is what film brokers do.

mr8mm (the OP in that thread) is John Schwind. He's allowing people to get in on the last order before they discontinue the stock permanently.

Ok, thanks for that info. I emailed John yesterday about getting in on an order. I just have to decide how much film is reasonable. I have never had good luck with long-term storage of any film in the ISO 200-400 range. I wish I could have ordered a bunch of the Plus-X before it was unavailable.

I was shooting my son's baseball game yesterday with my H8 Bolex Reflex and Super Cine-X and 0.9 ND filter. Someone asked me about my 'video camera' and I mentioned the advantage of the spring motor of being 100% mechanical, not needing a battery. He then asked what medium it records onto and I got a blank stare when I mentioned 'film.'

Because of the leaders a "25Ft roll" is actually 33 feet of film, so you can get 12 roils out of a 400ft roll. (assuming you have a split reel, some rewinds, a darkroom and some empty Regular 8 spools. - although most Regular 8 users are in the habit of Asking the lab to send them back)

Why be surprised. Videocamcorders have been in general use for 30 years. Many people have probably never seen a small-format movie camera.

Dwayne's Lab in Kansas has a few 8mm films - I ordered some with my last E6 processing order (35mm still film, don't get excited ). I have an old Paillard Bolex I want to try out, just for giggles.

Hey Folks

Since this topic has popped up again, does anyone know a good place to get the Double 8mm Foma R100 processed? I contacted DR5 and they said they can process it, but they will just re-spool it which I take to mean they won’t cut it down the middle and then splice it end to end so I can feed it through a projector. If I’m going to pay someone to process it I would like them to cut it too.

Dwyane's does not list the R100 as a stock they handle and Freestyle referred me back to DR5.

I managed to find an 8mm Kodak Brownie in a completely unopened box about a month ago and I would LOVE to use it. It's really rather amazing actually.

The Foma R100 stock seems very readily available but finding someone to process it has been difficult.

There is only one place I know of that processes Fomapan: Plattsburgh Photo in upstate New York. They don't have a website, but you can contact him via email at super8mm _at_ aol _dot_ com.

That's because Fomapan doesn't work well in the D-94A process that every other black-and-white reversal film uses. It worked with the original D-94 process, but the new chemistry gives it that mottled look. That's why it's so hard to find a place that processes it.

Apperently there is an issue with the Bleach from the new process not working at normal times. NCL did a roll of 16mm for meabout a year ago that came out brown and mottled, and they said that the process will need adjutments. I would sugest contacting any lab you plan to use and asking them if they have the process changes down on FOMA yet. B&W Film Fcatory in Toronto used to charge Extra to do the Foma, but they have now closed down.

UPDATE: The Replay I recieved is that "we are running this process without a problem
this bleaching problem was happening because kodak changed the entire process a couple years ago
so it would not work with anything except their new stock
we have since adjusted their formula to handle other stocks as well
and have tested the foma as well as agfa , orwo and older kodak stocks all with success"

So Looks like Foma R-100 Processing in Toronto is back in business.

I wrote to a whole bunch of places and the reply I got that gives me the most confidence is a business called Spectra Film and Video in California. Based on their reply they seemed to understand that the Foma stock needs to be handled differently from regular black and white stock.

It will take me a few weeks to go through a few rolls but I think I will go with Spectra when they are ready.

Now for the challeng of figuring out what to shoot! hahaha, my mind is so geared toward photographing stills I am quickly finding this whole "video" thing difficult.

We process much of the fomaR 'still film. Not very many, if any labs can run it.
Though we are not a cine lab, we can run 8mm stock. We would not be able to slit the film.
