I have to photograph a home on Nantucket and the owner suggested we swap my services and materials for the use of his home by my family for the weekend...till Monday night. Thinking day rates and costs of film, processing, etc, do you think it is worth it? Keep in mind, no property over there sells for less than 1.5mil....

YES!! The only problem is the ferry. On this, of all weekends, you may have trouble getting there, and almost certainly can't bring a car. Going back after Labor Day will be much easier, but, if you can't get a car over there, it doesn't really matter much. A rental for this weekend would have been almost impossible and top dollar even if you could have found a place (people reserve a year or more in advance!). But....it's an absolutely beautiful place and well worth visiting. Sounds like a great deal if you can arrange it.

Ask him to throw in Air fare and you are all set. Anyone who is having his home photographed is worth a lot and the air fare will not matter much.

A weekend in Nantucket is a great way. Its worth several hundred if not thousand dollars (depending on the house). That is, if you want value that instead of cash.

The customer traditionally pays the expenses.

(travel, film, lab, equipment rental)

It isn't right for you to dip into your pocket
AND do the work. No need for you to finance the job !

And, yep, Nantucket's worth it.

And, shoot, you don't have far to go !

oh ya...I live 2 miles from the ferry! I would consider it an investment into the Cape photo market...since moving down here, I haven't promoted myself too much yet. ..plus, I know the owner (who is also a contractor/ friend) I have plenty of film (to waste?) and the whole weekend to shoot maybe 8-10 shots. Thanks for the remarks...I think I'll do it.

Cool

Better check the weather forecast - here in NY we're due to get the remnants of Ernesto starting late tonight through maybe Sunday....

Just what I was thinking. Make the trade on a weekend with better weather and way less traffic. Does he want a photograph of his house in what's left of a hurricane? Try October the fishing is fab.

GO DREW! GO DREW! GO DREW!

Nantucket is overpriced and overcrowded and still one of the most beautiful places I know. What the cape was.

I d go for it! Make yourself a portfolio of his home and the area, could be a good promo for you....

actually the weather you're getting in NYC isn't supposed to get up here in a harsh way....just some on and off showers. I'll do the shooting tomorrow if conditions are right...and the rest of the time will be play time!

I was think about your shoot - and if the weather is as you expect - it will be a good one. Sunny/16 days at the beach can be a major PIA. If you have bright overcast skies - you may well be better off (I'm thinking espescially if the house has those grey, weathered wooden shingles). And if the weather is worse than you expect you may have a chance to get some "angry skies" over the house.

Let us know what happens - and have a good time. Oh, and if you're planning on doing some swimming - do not rent a copy of "Jaws". :D
