Irish Photography & Photographers in the 19th Century by David Davison
Wednesday, April 30 at 6.00pm, Minerva Suite, RDS, Dublin

Whilst Ireland may not have contributed to the invention of the photographic processes in 1839, Irishmen were amongst the first practitioners of this new art form. In post famine years Irish photographers, both women and men, made reputations for excellence on the exhibition circuits at home but particularly in England.

This illustrated talk will present an overview of the most prominent nineteenth century photographers and their technology.

Presented by David Davison, a professional photographer specialising in architecture and fine arts; who has illustrated numerous books, the most recent being Public Architecture in Ireland 1680-1760, by Edward McParland, and the Pevsner Series on Dublin. He established the Course in Professional Photography at DIT, lecturing there for many years

Deeply interested in the history of photography, he is the author of Impressions of an Irish Countess, which described the life and achievements of Mary, Countess of Rosse (1812-1885) and her darkroom at Birr Castle dating to 1853, one of the earliest in the world. He has exhibited and lectured in Europe and the USA.
