Hi Steve,
What are you interested in photographing?
Iowa City is a college town with a wide variety of architecture. A mix of old and new. At the center of campus is the Old Capitol, the original capitol building for Iowa. They have nice tours of the newly restored interior. But, Im not sure if they allow photography inside. Boyd tower is located in the hospital. It is a gothic tower surrounded by the new hospital.
The bars and coffee clubs across the street from the Old Cap are usually full of students at night for action shots. Although I dont think classes will be in session while you are there.
The Iowa River cuts the campus in half and is fairly scenic.
A short drive outside of town and you are in the country. Barns, fields, planting season etc. Drive out of town and start going up and down the gravel roads.
Kalona is just south of Iowa City on highway 1. It has a large Amish population.
The Amana Colonies are about 45 minutes away. Good food and beer--German, family style.
The Mississippi River is about an hour away and has scenic overlooks, barge traffic, and recreation.
Also, the University has a nice little art museum. One of my favorite works is there, a Rodin bronze of a boys head. Also, check out the Rodin in front of the Law School.
