Anything photogenic around Iowa City, IA? I'll be teaching there May 21-23 at the University of Iowa Hospital. I'll be teaching during the day, but I have evenings free.

Thanks,
Steve

Hi Steve,

What are you interested in photographing?

Iowa City is a college town with a wide variety of architecture. A mix of old and new. At the center of campus is the “Old Capitol”, the original capitol building for Iowa. They have nice tours of the newly restored interior. But, I’m not sure if they allow photography inside. Boyd tower is located in the hospital. It is a gothic tower surrounded by the new hospital.

The bars and coffee clubs across the street from the Old Cap are usually full of students at night for action shots. Although I don’t think classes will be in session while you are there.

The Iowa River cuts the campus in half and is fairly scenic.

A short drive outside of town and you are in the country. Barns, fields, planting season etc. Drive out of town and start going up and down the gravel roads.

Kalona is just south of Iowa City on highway 1. It has a large Amish population.

The Amana Colonies are about 45 minutes away. Good food and beer--German, family style.

The Mississippi River is about an hour away and has scenic overlooks, barge traffic, and recreation.

Also, the University has a nice little art museum. One of my favorite works is there, a Rodin bronze of a boy’s head. Also, check out the Rodin in front of the Law School.

Hi Steve,

I live in Iowa City. Most of the Photos in my Gallery are from this area. What format do you shoot? University camera down town I.C. has a pretty good range of films if you want to buy your film after you get here.

Hello Steve,

Welcome to Iowa City. I used to live in IC but now I move to 80 miles southeast of IC. I also work in hospital. Allen already listed most interesting places around IC, I couldn't think out more, just say hi to you.

Steve,
I live in the Quad Cities which is approx 50-60 miles due east on I-80. There is barge traffic as mentioned, but there are also some steam paddle boat replicas there. 2 are casinos and one is a dinner cruise. It is called Celebration cruise. There are about 3 old bridges traversing the river as well, and all can be visible in one shot. Have fun!

I live in Webster City, Iowa, which is 2 hours from Iowa City...wish I got there more often as the main camera shop there, University Camera, stocks much of the B&W photo gear that I know and love.
