Hello all,

i joined this forum not because I am an avid photographer but because I appreciate the story behind the photographs. As a result, I started out collecting civil war era tin types, ambros, dagueros and cdv’s. My interests later expanded to early aviation photographs, E.S. Curtis native american photos and then to 1930’s/1940’s sports photos and more recently Thomas Mangelson nature images

That being said, I am very ignorant regarding the identification and assessment of the various generations of photographic prints. So, if you will excuse this ignorance, I intend to pop in occasionally to seek your expert guidance. I thank you in advance for educating a clueless, yet willing, student!

Welcome. You might be interested in some of the “Alt process” threads which are largely about modern use of various historic processes.

Welcome to Photrio! Lots of good folks here. No such thing as clueless.

Looking forward to hearing from you. My wife is an artist, she's been keenly interested in tintypes lately. Not making them, studying them. 😊 👍

Thanks so much! I love fine art with a pretty significant collection. I have zero artistic talent perhaps that is why I appreciate it so much.

I just love this image! I picked up this Chris Killip photo but assume it is definitely not original. How can I tell if it is an authorized reproduction or is this just be mass produced in violation of copyright?

Whichever works best for you, really. Sometimes it just saves you a lot of typing if the same thing has already been discussed before, and you can just latch onto that. And sometimes, it may be preferable to highlight a topic and create some visibility for it by creating a new thread. It's your call; as moderators we may step in and merge or split something if we feel it's to the advantage of the community as a whole. If that happens, it's not a sign you did anything 'wrong'!

I did not expect such a quick and enthusiastic response! After congratulating me, they stated that it is definitely Chris Killip’s handwriting as well.

Congrats ! That's a great find ! I'm a huge fan of Killip, and a bit envious right now 🙂.

Yeah I was elated to hear from Matt Killip so quickly. I purchased this photograph as part of a group that included 5 Arthur Rothstein photos as well. I felt more confident in the Rothstein’s but assumed the Killip to be an unauthorized reporoduction from his Isle of Mann series.

Any guess on value? I do not intend to sell as I love collecting these type of images but it is always good to understand value.

Here is one of the Arthur Rothstein photos. Heavier and older stock, for sure. Signed but not consistent with the “Arthur Rothstein” signatures that I have seen. Verso provides little help with just a reference number on the mounted board. Curious when this would have been printed. Any thoughts on the reference number?
