Wouldn't it be cool if we could get more interpretive comparisons, of the same negative, like the one Jorge and Jim did? I do not think it would be tough because with pyro, a negative can be developed with a dual purpose in mind.

This is a thought and one I would like to participate in as long as the negative was contactable. I have no enlarger.

Here is my thought:

1-A negative, developed for dual purposes alt and silver, is sent in a round to a specific number of people.
2-The negative is printed by a person in a timely manner, and prints could be made for the participants, and sent to the next person who does the same.

At the end there are a number of different interpretations of the same negative. that each person has. Since I have never even thought about this before I am sure there are a lot of holes tht need to be ironed out. What do you folks think?

I'm down. I'm sure we could have different small groups like the other print exchange. Some can do enlarged prints, some contact silver, some contact alt, etc.

This idea came up a while back but never really got off the ground. Hunt around in this category for "negative exchange" and the old thread should turn up. I'd participate.

Like I said in the other thread, EricR was supposed to be getting this going. As far as i know he has the negatives ready to send out. I could be wrong about his being ready with them.

looks like this never got off the ground But there seems to be no reason why. What would make this work?

I have been thinking

Since I have no enlarger and can only do contacts we can start two groups. One for enlargments and the other for contacts. A person can participate in either of the exchanges or both. To keep this real easy let's start by keeping the groups easy and small, 4-5 folks in each.

The contact group will work in 4x5-8x10 to ease printing costs(plus I am not set up for anything larger) If there are those who want to shoot larger then by all means we can work that out.

Enlargements will be 35mm-4x5. If you are not able to print a certain size say so.

I am not a very good database person but will do my best to keep things organized. Instead of three negs only one is needed. This is about interpretation not a challenge. I want to see how others see my negs or another persons. Nothing scientific about this, pure artistic interpretation is all that is needed.

Should one person shoot a neg and that make the rounds, or should each shoot a neg and all send them at the same time to the first person on their list. When they get finished then they send the neg to another person. When all 4-5 people have had a shot at the neg then prints can be sent around. I suppose each peron should make 4-5 prints too so they can see what others did with the negs.

I hope this makes sense.

Hi Mark, I can help set something up but it will be a few weeks till I have time. I'll 'sticky' your thread for now. You may want to talk to Eric and both of you can help manage it?

If it helps any, I can say that doing this was a lot of fun. It is a very interesting experience to get a negative and a print and compare what one thinks is a "good" print with what other people think it is.

You all should give it a try, it is fun and very informative.

Intercontinental would not be a problem. I love getting mail from other countries. It gives me something to talk to the Mail lady about. She loves the packages from Ukraine, sshe says it is like stepping back in time.

Count me in- I hope it's a 4x5 neg. But I already know what the reaction to my interpretation will be- "too dark!"...sorry, that's the way I like them!

I have exchanged a few PMs with Eric. He made a good point. Apparently the original idea was to have one set of negs floating around so the creative juices do not diffuse. I can see this. I can also see the person on the end of the list not getting a neg for a really long time.

What would you folks like to have happen?

Here are the options on rotation of five folks in a group:

person one shoots a set of negs prints his/her choice then sends the negs to person two and so on.

Person one and two shoot negs and prints. They send their negs to the next person on their list. Person one sends to person 2 and person three sends to person four etc.. The rotation is complete when persons one and two receive their own negs back.

Each member of the group shoots and prints a neg and each sends it to the next person.
Person one's schedule- 123451
person 2- 234512
etc...

What do you think?

Ok I have to admit I let the ball drop. Life got in the way as it sometimes does. I do in fact have the negs ready to go. Well most of them anyway. the LF one got fogged. During one of my computer crashes I think I lost the list of those that were interested. Please email me again (no PM's please as I can't transfer the info directly into my CRM program) if you are interested.

In communicating with Mark it appears he wants to get a contact printing exchange going for ULF negs. Mine (35mm and MF) will be a seperate list but there is nothing to say people couldn't be on both. If I can get out this weekend I will do a LF neg of the same scene I shot for the 35mm and MF. To bad the light won't be exactly the same.

I will commit to having this in the mail by Friday Jul 30th. So get your names into me asap. I will contact Sean and get things set up with him like the postcard exchange.

In your email send me your real name, forum name, full mailing address, and email address that is best to contact you at. My list will be for 35mm, MF for sure and hopefully LF negs. Just enlarge the one you want to.

As I said before the intent of this is to see how each of us interpret the same negative. Each of us has their own vision, technical abilities etc and it will be neat to see the results. Once the negs go full circle then a new set can be made of a different subject and included with the finished prints from the first set. That way those at the beginning of the list can see the full results as the circle is made again.

I will be handling the 35mm and MF + 4x5 negs. Mark will be doing the ULF contact stuff. So you can contact one, the other, or both. Whatever floats your boat.

y'know... when I first saw this thread a day or two ago, the picture "interpretive print exchange" conjured in my head was a bunch of APUGers in tights, dancing around Martha Graham-ishly, passing prints back and forth. I guess I need my head CLA'd, eh?

Aggie. I do not think they make them large enough for me. And it would be damned offensive if they did  .

This got going real quick I may need some help setting up the mailing list but I will ask as things get closer. I can handle the contact stuff. 4x5 to 8x10. Any larger and we will need a heads up. I will set my e-mail up if it is not already and you can e-mail me the same information as for Eric. I will try to work with the same deadline as Eric. It will give me a reason to go out and shoot, and process more negs.

Because of the cost of the film and general mailing, I think it would help if people involved in these projects, kicked in few (insert your currency) dollars to help defray the cost. I would be wiling to buy a box of 8x10 film and send it to Mark. I can also buy what ever format film Eric would need. That way more of the negatives can be sent around quicker.

Mark I can also sew you a new Tutu. I even know the perfect site to take your portrait in it. It is called little window rock, just south of Page. My style of spot, about 100 feet from the dirt road.
