I've been exhibiting at Photo NY so I haven't had time to really get down to the nitty gritty about what was going on with it.

And yet you've had enough time to start, and continue, NINE threads in the Soapbox.

Jorge I'd be happy to help DavidS in any way that I can, that's what APUG is all about. I'm not unhappy about his reply to my comments, it's what we've all come to expect from him.

Well Les, then you are more forgiving than I am....

As I stated a long time ago:
(there was a url link here which no longer exists)

Intuition was not so bad at that time.

The change in title for the third issue shows us the not_well_thinked businessplan of the magazine.
Rather an opportunist change.

Fred

Is that all, just nine? Since they're still going on, I bet they were good threads and I hope we're all learning a lot from them. In December, when my boss is slated to give me a vacation, I plan on developing the rolls of film I have taken from the past six months or so and posting them in the gallery... please don't compare them to anyone else...I'm not at all talented in photography...I don't think so at least.

Shux, Fred, you're pretty harsh. Now you see, if you knew anything about publishing a magazine, you'd know that in the world of magazines, sometimes the best way to see how well a market will react to a new publication isn't planning or crunching numbers (which I did a lot of, I remember people telling me that my magazine wasn't based upon passion, rather marketing statistics) it's putting it out there. Now, if I was a major fortune 500 publishing company, yeah..okay, then that would take a ton of planning and business plan and everything elese, but sometimes you just have to see how the market reacts to it.

I printed 500 copies of "Inked" magazine for AIPAD earlier this year. AIPAD started on a Thursday night, by Saturday I had to order an additional 500 copies because I had already sold out of the first 500. By the time the show was over, I had 100 left. That was a dinky little 22 page preview edition.

This is an excerpt from an E-Mail I received from Speeimpex, one of the biggest, if not the biggest magazine distributors in the US to bookstores:

Borders received 1005 copies and sold 626 for a phenomenal 62.3% sale!
Barnes & Noble received 919 copies and sold 404 for a 44%

Well thought out? Maybe, maybe not. However, if I can sustain numbers like that I'd say initial market reaction to Focus is doing just fine. In fact, Borders and Barnes & Noble increased their order of magazines for my 4th issue, plus I signed a major contract with Disticor to have distribution throughout the EU starting with my 5th issue. Shoot, Fred, for a not-so-well thought out idea, I'm doing okay....

Part of it is the magazine and the concept of the magazine, most of it are people like you Fred, and Jorge and David and everyone else...so many of you have such an overwhelming thirst for a great photography publication that to spend $24 a year for a subscription of six issues is a drop in the bucket compared to the amount of emotional reward you'll have once you pick up a copy of Focus. Take the passion this entire website has and multiply it until you hit the millions...and then take the people who collect and sell and teach this stuff...it's unbelievable. So many people are so enthusiastic about photography...and to have so many quality magazines in the market just means I have a very high level to achieve and to attain.

If the moderators would kindly close this forum...so we could move onto more important issues at hand.

God I know I'm going to regret not putting this in a PM but oh boy David, you sure know how to keep the fires burning! Resist the last word and it will stop!
