Okay, so these are RAW captures that are basically rendered as gray scale after conversion? No removal of color casts, etc.

Thanks,

Don

Don,

They are RAW files but they were rendered as gray scale with a custom color balance so this was done at the time of shooting. The 830 nm conversion gives very good grayscale directly with a custom color balance.

I use a IR-converted Nikon D40 with very good results. It was a bit of a hassle to find a good Raw-to-photoshop conversion workflow, but by using a custom "camera profile" made with DNG profile editor, I could overcome the Color Temp restrictions present in Adobe Camera Raw.

Here's one of the images. It is stitched from three portrait format frames to make the square final image. I'm using a cheap 18-55 nikon zoom for IR and it is sharp as hell. Very little IR focus shift and much sharper in IR than in visible light.

And here's one with more pronounced Wood's effect:

My school just had a few Canon 10Ds and 20Ds converted. I've been told that the camera raw needs some type of software of plug-in. Is this the case and if so what is it?

If anyone is still watching this thread, I read recently that many sensors have IR sensitivity to some degree as they come from the factory. The test is to set the camera for live view, if possible, and aim the business end of a TV remote at it and press a button. If the live view shows a little flash, you're good to go, with the appropriate filter, of course. My Pentax K 5 shows as sensitive; I haven't tried it yet for shooting since I don't have an IR filter, yet.
