hi candoblue

there are a some options for inexpensive large format lenses
if you can find a "tominion 127mm 4.7 " lens you might be happy with it.
they usually come in a copal press shutter. i've had one for years and it has no trouble
covering a 4x5 sheet of film. it has sharpness if you like that, 4.7 isn't too fast or too slow
and typically these lenses aren't too expensive ... and you can use the shutter
for a g-claron lens if you end up getting one at somepoint down the road.
optar and ilex lenses and bausch and lomb, and wollensak, are a few more brands to think about.
i don't know what the URL is but there is a book/publication about the history of
the photography industry in rochester ny, in there you will find the who's who of lenses to look for
on eBay. also go to cameraeccentric.com and look in the catalogs found in the "information" tab
you will find armloads of catalogs to help you figure out what's what.
often times there are "unloved" lenses that are bargains/steals because at the moment people are too tuned
into sharpness or softness or junque or whatever ...
also, don't discount old folders. often times the larger ones have shuttered lenses that can be removed
from the camera and suck on a new camera. some roll films ( like 122 ) were pretty big ( popular ) and big ( size )
and the lenses were pretty good.
and who knows maybe in a few years the lens you harvested off a 12$ junk camera will be worth hundreds of dollars

best of luck with your lenses and camera

I've seen plenty of nice 210mm f/5.6 lenses sell for around $150 on Ebay. With shipping you are still within your budget. Schneider, Rodenstock, Fuji, Nikon and Caltar are all pretty much the same in quality. Let condition and price determine which you buy.

I looking to build my own 4x5 monorail camera...

Since you are building your own monorail camera, you should build your own lens.

Therefore, here is another vote for building your own pinhole.

Why build a complicated monorail camera if one is using a pinhole? A simple box will suffice for a pin hole optic and, IMO, is better in every way conceivable. A well-built monorail camera deserves a lens that can take advantage of the versatility it offers.

So are we back to a paint can with a hole in the center of the lid ?

+1 on Reinholds 190mm...it is pure magic on 4X5, but would need some sort of shutter mechanism for use.

I don't like the look of meniscus lenses but that's personal preference.

I can't help but think overall we're confusing the issue further for the OP.

The OP has time, he has to build the camera first. There's a good chance a nice lens will be listed here or the LFPF (need to be a member a month to access the Sles/Wanted) well within his budget.

A friend gifted me a Ilex portronic paragon 6 3/8" f:4.5 tonight. It has no shutter but free is better than $. Anyone heard of this lens before?

A little late to this discussion but my favorite Speed Graphic has this lens on it, in an Ilex #3 shutter, and mine is unbelievably sharp. A couple of my fellow 4x5ers here in town have pooh-poohed this as an inferior lens but I am completely happy with the results.

Based on the tone on a handful of the replies on here, I highly doubt this person will be back, LOL!
