I heard that since the lower 48 is not directly connected to Alaska, that Canada has turned the major highway into a $35CA or $40CA tollway for vehicle transporting goods to or from Alaska. Does anyone have more information on that?

But is it a name change or is it an entirely different entity? Tariff's aren't levied aganst a patch of dirt, but against a political entity. A friend of mine was selling some mosaics that were Roman from the 2nd century AD. Should they be taxed as if they came from Italy? What if they were made in the Roman province of Britannia?

That is the sort of thing that gets dealt with in the wording of the tariffs themselves.
Back when the tariffs were in binder form, those binders were huge and full of incredibly boring legalese.

Sounds more like a duty rate than a toll.

Today I heard that the toll for all trucks is 25% of the value each way. That is raising the costs of all goods in Alaska. The Alaska governor concerned about the rising costs and supply line problems.

Might be time for the implementation of the Anchorage Airlift. It worked in Berlin in '48 šŸ™‚

US tariffs on Canadian goods doesn't affect US goods like Kodak film purchased by Canadians. Likewise, what Americans are buying Canadian photo products?

Reciprocal tariffs do though.

Tjhat would raise the prices both ways to and from the lower 48 even more than the 25% tariff toll. There is not easy way out of this other than rescinding all the tariff.s

But that's on the importing country, in this case, Canada. They don't have to add reciprocal tariffs and make their citizens pay more for film. After all, that's what the US is doing mainly. We're adding tariffs to reciprocate against other countries, so now everyone is doing it. What is Canada's tariffs on US-made film? Also, in Europe, don't they add VAT taxes as well to imported photo products? Japanese cameras that cost $1000 in B&H Photo in NYC cost $12-1400 in Europe because of it. It seems every government is out of money and hopes to get richer off of their photographers.

Thanks Sirius I do make the occasional joke out of a very serious situation via an exaggerated response to lighten things. If I'd been Gary Cooper in High Noon I'd have prefaced the gunfight by saying: "Look lads there was an Englishman, Scotsman and Irishman waiting for a train ......

'Tis the British way 😁

I just purchased a Sinar board drilled to 47mm for my Fuji 260mm W/S f6.7 from a Canadian seller and no tariffs/duties were imposed.

For many years prior to now, due to the existing agreement between our countries, there were no duties (or more accurately, zero rated duties) charged as a result of the applicable tariff provisions on most things imported either way between the USA and Canada. There were some very narrow exceptions for very specific marketplaces - but certainly not anything photographic.
Some so-called "reciprocal" duties were very recently imposed by the US against Canadian goods in breach of the existing agreement.
In response to which Canada very recently announced new duties against US goods to actually reciprocate for the breach of the pre-existing agreement between the countries.
Thus the label.
This thread is about how things are shaking out in these very uncertain times.

{Mea Culpa note - thought better about most of it.}

How about those self-serve gas stations? 🤣

It sounds like aluminum beer cans are supplied by Canadian manufacturers. This could be the straw that breaks the back of this foolishness šŸ˜…
Sure shut down the North American auto industry, but mess with Coors Light, this will not stand 🤣😊

I'm confident that the "tariff" dust will settle shortly, if it hasn't already. The powers that be had decided that a leveling of the playing field of trade was overdue. The markets tend to adjust to these things. Any further pontification on it from me would certainly be off-topic for this site and cause for deletion of post. Speaking for myself, film photography has suffered quite a number of years of facing extinction via replacement by digital technology. Yet here we are. Let's take some pictures and ignore the noise.
