Yes, the lens will very likely turn up in the classifieds, so spank me if you must. I've got 2.

This conversion only seems to work on the early lenses. Later ones and Raptars don't get the same effect from spacing.

This is a subtle soft focus lens. More than a Heliar. Less than a Pinkham. For some folks, the perfect solution, and also important; They aren't worth an arm and a leg.

Yes, an early Series II 7 1/4" Velostigmat in an "Auto" shutter.

I have a 7-inch Series II Velostigmat (in Optimo shutter) that I assume is very similar to your lens, and I was thinking of performing this modification for soft-focus portraiture.

Do I just remove the front retaining ring and lens element, insert a 0.032" shim or spacer and reassemble the lens?

Hi Jim. Yes, that's it. Caution, though, the front glass will protrude beyond the rim after that so watch your lens cap and never set it down on the front rim.
