What can I say about nothing? One of these days I'll die. Until then I'll do something, and I might even have a camera nearby.

You better have a camera nearby! Art is the only real way to make meaning in this accidental existence!

Too freaking fast. I was trying to photograph a swarm of birds that were circling near a bridge just a few days ago. After a good ten minutes I moved on. When I go to look at that memory card I will be surprised if I caught a single bird/rocket.

The chicks undoubtedly came from eggs.

@je55eah How is your pet peeve? Do you take care of it. If one does not feed and tend to their pet peeve, PETA will get after them! Beware!

Ask you anything? Anything? Are you sure?

Why is 42 not the meaning of life?

Conveniently, I don't have one.

My girlfriwnd and I went canoeing today; we took her pomeranian along and tolled the canoe four times. He was mildly traumatized.

Why is 42 not the meaning of life?

Mr. Adams wrote that a planetoid computer claimed it is the meaning. Did anyone ever figure out why?

There's an interesting rabbi on youtube who has suggested that we exist to fullfill a need that god created for himself.

Perhaps we can create some meaning in life if we are motivated by a noble ambition. I have a suspicion that we are wise if we find a way to enjoy ourselves, but if we care about the wellbeing of children and animals and the earth then we should be conscientious. If we abuse the environment or ourselves or other people then the age old problems will inevitably continue. I have written about my ethical and political ideals and those essays can be found be searching for 'the Underscore Party.' If everyone enjoys better opportunities then everyone is less likely to suffer, including you.

Hahaha, when the thread started, my first thought was to ask "what is your favourite colour"... 😄

sorry, I don't really have one. What is yours? How does it affect you?

I really appreciate all of the welcoming messages.

I bought a Sony a700 from Adorama today. Hopefully it will be a worthy companion to my Nikon d3100.

I have been using my phone for wide angle shots and the Nikon is primarily used for telephoto shots. While everything is possible, I think the Sony will become my main telephoto shooter. The Nikon will get a shorter lens, maybe a 105mm or the 18-55mm kit zoom. If I'm going into tighter or darker spaces I'll probably put a 35mm lens on it. My phone will still come out for wide angle shots and for video.

If anyone is still reading this thread, how often do you do macro photography? What equipment do you use? Why? What subjects make great macro photos?

Still reading. For my AF Nikons I have the Nikon 28mm to 200mm AF zoom, the Tamron 28mm to 300mm zoom and they share a Nikon 20mm to 25mm AF zoom. My Hasselblads have their own set of lenses, but you are asking about 35mm lenses. I also have a WideLux F7 for 35mm panoramic photographs.

This lens for your d3100:

look on the second hand market where the price will be considerably lower.

I think you are doing it wrong. The canoe should stay upright and the passengers inside it. I've never flipped a canoe in 30+ years of paddling, but I also avoid white water.

I shoot closeup a lot, but rarely macro (greater magnification than 1:1). I'm usually in the 1:2 to 1:8 range with a long lens and extension tubes to get close to flowers, insects, and small animals. I lately have been using a digital camera like the Sony A7R4 and 200-600 plus tubes. I also use medium format and large format, but mostly for plant details since they don't run away while I'm setting up the camera.
