I'm curious about POP silver paper

In a art photo magazine, I saw some prints done of POP silver based paper. According to the article, the paper is very slow and the only way to print is to contact print it. I love the look of it. I assume it's like platinum printing you print with the paper in the sun with a split back contact printer. The most intriguing is that the process has a longer tonal range. About 40% more tonal range. Can POP silver paper can be hand made like coating platinum or palladium papers with chemistry? I've been doing Ziatype which is a POP process and I love the process. Any information is appreciated.

There are no POP papers being manufactured currently that I know of. Some of the workers who are coating their own silver gelatin papers are using POP formulas. I suggest searching in their domain. There have been threads on the subject on this forum as well as others.

At $60 USD for 11 sheets you will have to make it yourself or go broke. Making POP is not that hard, especially gelatin POP.

This thread really ought to be moved to the alt process forum.

Thanks for all the wonderful responses. pschwart link to Unblinking Eye is great. It looks a lot like salt printing with gelatin. Is that correct?

The best thing about making your own is you can coat watercolor papers and make matte prints. Can be toned with gold or platinum like salt prints.

Anyone used Arches Platine paper for these collodio-chloride prints? Since this paper is already sized, do you know if has to be coated with gelatin for this process?

I am going to mix up some emulsion this week and assume Arches Platine would be a good paper to try.

Any comments based on experience would be helpful.

uncoated baryta paper works best for this process. we used several watercolor papers for the workshop; not sure if arches was one of them. I don't remember coating any gelatin on paper before coating
as always you can actually do the process to find out what works
best, peter
