The general public can't understand why anybody in their right mind who isn't a pervert would want to take pictures of people they don't know.

Hey, unless there's cake and candles involved, you belong in prison mister.

That is my experience also. Especially if a stranger, the subject "needs to know" that there is something photogenic happening before they become agreeable. Othereise, they are likely to be suspicious and maybe hostile.

I was responding to what Martin implied by saying, "And if you must use them..........................", which I took to mean, if completed, "you aren't much of a photographer".
Martin did not discern between asking and not asking.

EDIT: Change to "I was responding to what I believe Martin implied..."

You inferred. I implied nothing, simply leaving you to your own conclusion.

And you picked two names from untold millions. A distinct minority. Hardly making a valid point.

You inferred.
So clarified in the post.

I implied nothing, simply leaving you to your own conclusion.
So you have no opinion?

And you picked two names from untold millions. A distinct minority. Hardly making a valid point.

That's silly. Listing millions of names is not necessary to validate the point, which is that using disquieting or scandalous subjects is valid.
Those two names suffice to validate the point. Excellence is always achieved only by the distinct minority.

Oh sure. He wanted pix from you to use for promotion. Did he offer an assignment? Did he offer to compensate you in any way or grant access for you to shoot unencumbered? No. Without evening being sure of who you are, he just says "send me pix". My bet is they were either for him or the guy who's head of his archdiocese.

Is someone raising cattle around that place? I believe the Latin phrase is: I smell "bovenis excrementus".

And as far as the pool and the lifeguard are concerned. I would have tossed a Baby Ruth candy bar into the pool, pointed and yelled "DOODY!!!". Then left. I always carry a couple of those or Snickers in my run bag for just such occasions. :whistling:

A disquieting or scandalous subject does not make a good photograph. And if you must use them..........................

I don't know where you get that from but there are many disquieting war images that are very good photographs, such as the one of the naked child running down the muddy road crying... We all know that, it's disquieting, scandalous, and a GREAT photograph.

No one thinks its child porn either. Because in that time at that place it was showing the world something that was going on that would make an impact on the world.

On the other hand, shooting a kid at a carnival licking an ice cream happens often and could be the wrong image to take in the wrong place, and you'd be a perv for taking it... Context...

But again, I disagree that taking a scandalous image can indeed make a good photograph.

Love the quote. "If you don't take money, they can't tell you what to do."

I tend to agree - I actually don't think it is going anywhere - most have had their say....dare I say, lock time?

I tend to agree also.

This thread has mutated into some form of man-eating monster and has easily run it's course.

If someone was to read the last few pages and not the opening post, they may be lead to believe that this thread WAS about a serial naked ice cream licking child photographer.

As has been mentioned here and via PM, perhaps it's time to lock the beast away?

Before the gate crashes down . . .

I've found the thread to be enlightening on several perspectives (and contexts) that were not obvious to me. Then again, I don't do street photography. When I shoot a street, I want all those people to get out of the way of the buildings.

I have been amazed as I've got older at how many people have a screw loose. You are bound to find adverse reactions doing street photography.

OK, so today I decided to try some street photography.

I thought it was going well until I was attacked by an angry guy, and in the scuffle the camera got completely jammed!

So now I'm wondering, does anyone know the best way to remove a Yashicamat from my ass?

Lol! Complete joke or partial truth?

Just did some street photography with my newly squired yashika44LM  it's safe to say mine is not jammed, and all my subjects were fascinated by the camera and let me take their candids on the NYC streets and a Johnny Rockets restaurant including a few staff who WANTED to be in the picture, I think I'm just really approachable and friendly and that helps.

Of course I took them on 1966 expired Verichrome Pan so might not have come out LOL

Here's the thing - I think that NYC is very much one of the very few places in the world where street photography will not even batter an eye lid. There is something about that place that people just don't seem to care about little things like this.
