Hi, spilled the last of my ID11 yesterday with 2 films already in the tank. Very frustrating as the shop didn't have any more. So I bought a bottle of Ilfotec HC so I will always have something to hand.

I plan to mix a litre at a time of working strength solution and toss what I don't need. I have syringes and a 1cl graduated measuring cylinder. However, I really don't want to mess with stock solution or mixing 1:47, sounds like more trouble than its worth. I plan to mix 1:49.

There are lots of threads about HC110 at 1:49, but a lot point to a dead external website, and they also tend to recommend 30 second agitation, I prefer to agitate every minute.

Will mixing 1:49 make a significant difference from 1:47 if I use the same or similar times recommended by Ilford? The only change I can imagine would be slightly reduced contrast which I could compensate for at the printing stage.

Any thoughts?

Jason Brunner moved his HC-110 information to APUG: (there was a url link here which no longer exists)

And there is no functional difference between 1+47 and 1+49.

Why not mix up exactly what you need instead?

Thanks for the most useful reply. I could mix what I need each time, but I don't like maths, and I I do like consistency, which I guessing is harder to get with mixing smaller amounts. After all, Ilford recommend you mix it as a stock solution to avoid the difficulties measuring small amounts. I'll see how it goes though.

Mix it like you would HC-110, direct from Syrup. Measure with a syringe and wash it out with water directly into your solution. Very consistent results that way. I use a length of plastic tube on my syringe for ease. The silicone rubber tubing that is used for radio controlled model fuel line works well. I use 1:63 which is 8mil in a total volume of 500mil. Very easy to do and no brain straining maths ! Good luck.

I like the look of your photos in your blog. They're sharp and fine grained for scanned hp5. Would you say that's due to exposing for 200 iso? Or you scanner?

Thanks so much. Dilute developer and not over agitating combined with enough exposure to register shadow detail. It all makes a negative with the right contrast for s@ann[ng or wet printing. You can always add contrast, but it is harder to save an image that is too contrasty. My personal recipe is 12 mins in dilution H 1:63 @20°C. Agitate first 30 seconds, then 2 inversions at 4 mins, 2 more at 8 mins and pour out at 12 mins. I also use the top reel of a 2 reel tank with an empty reel in the bottom to avoid surge marks and uneven artifacts. Hope that helps you, and same regime for HP5+ and Tri-X and Delta400.
Regards,
John
