Ilford XP 2

Apparantely Ilford would stop producing XP2 chromogenic film. The retailer in my photoshop told me so (this is a maior store selling darkroom stuff).

According to THIS XP-2 is still in production.

I do sometimes wonder if it is intentional misinformation on the part of the stores - possibly trying to shore up their collapsing digicam sales !

This is my take on it too. Camera shops and their salespeople have a loooooong tradition of trying to sell you whatever gives them the largest commission, rather that what you actually want to buy...

It maybe so
I got a lot of Ilford FP4, Delta 400 and Xp2 at 1.50 a roll becuase they said Wolf camera was discontinuing these....
I late rfound that the problem was that it was "freight damaged" film, the boxes were torn......
Can;t complain $30 got me a good supply

I think its worth pointing out that Simon is not simply "member here and works for Ilford" - he is an Ilford employee who can *speak for* Ilford, something that is not the case with most employees at companies. AFAICT he is here because of teh job he has at Ilford.

It depends on the camera shop. If it's a chain store plc then head office dictates the pitch of the salesman and if head office has decided that as a result of an exclusive contract with the XYZ supplier, that XYZ is the thing that must be promoted then that's what you get. Clearly stores such as Jessops don't see any future in analogue and the evidence is clear to see.

The one man stores still exist and it's here that impartial advice is most likely to be available but the economics of such businesses mean that some prices are appreciably higher without any immediate apparent justification.

I am guilty as anyone of chasing the cheapest price yet I try and check the one man stores when I can. There are still surprising bargains there in terms of second hand lens and chemicals. One shop which I can visit in person can supply Ilford ID11 as cheaply as any source on the internet when I take into account the postage charge involved.

Buyer need to look at the whole range of sevices provided and make decisions on an "overall balance" approach. It may mean checking out or engaging with the particular business over several transactions.

All big organisations rely on the consumer not being concerned with anything beyond the price of the immediate purchase.

In another thread I am sure I read that Ilford had no intention of discontinuing any of the existing range of films and that ncludes XP2 Super. Indeed they are considering re-introducing SFX 200 (but in 35mm only). I think we panic far too much on here & rush into drawing conclusions without checking previous threads.

Maybe not exactly that, but close. They don't carry much film anymore, and they are told to absolutely never let you out of the store without a purchase. Moreover, the current salesmen have no knowledge of the film world or the products available. Unless you go to a professional store with a very good customer base for film you are very likely to get incorrect information and very little help these days.

I often found that people at photo stores tend to treat film/darkroom customers like obnoxious children who are just there to waste their time instead of buying an ink cartridge like a good boy or girl... My local store is a part of a big chain, and I constantly have to tell them that such or such product does in fact exist, yes it is available, no the company did not go under, etc. Then they check their little computer and lo and behold! ITS THERE! My advice is to go to the source - and that is strictly not at the retail end of things. Since all the smaller shops, ran by people who actually know things about photography, have all gone under or gone digital (mainly through their own dinosaur like tendencies...), the big chains are staffed by one or two people who know a thing or two and a bunch of people who could have been working at Staples, or a furniture store.
Then again, that is just my experience. And XP2 seems to be alive and well,

I wonder how big of an order would have to be made to convince Ilford to do a run of XP2 in 4x5?? I love XP2 and would jump at it in 4x5 for sure.
