In a separate thread discussing the longevity of Ilford DDX developer, one poster mentioned that knowing how to read the product code to determine production date or expiration date is a useful skill. I agree, but unfortunately no further information on how to read the codes was forthcoming.

Can anyone share with us all how these codes are properly read? I've got a bottle of DDX (rather, my son has a bottle of DDX) that I'd like to "read."

As far as I know you can read Ilford paper codes to determine age( to an extent as the code repeats itself every few years) but I have never seen any one claim to have cracked the product codes. Still you have had only about 80 viewers with only one reply and there are about 45,000 of us here so there is hope yet :D

Perhaps the reluctance to explain yet again can be explained by the OP's failure to effectively search APUG's rich archive. Here's just one existing thread with the answer:

(there was a url link here which no longer exists)

Note that the linked thread links back to an even earlier thread on the same subject.

For anyone having trouble searching, simply go to Google, then enter the terms of interest followed by "site:apug.org" and all will be revealed.

I must admit that the fact the Ilford use the same system for dating chemicals has escaped me as well. You are right that these threads do repeat themselves and a search can produce the information needed sometimes but can require a lot of "wading through many posts"

It is a pity that there aren't APUG articles covering this kind of thing.

Smacked down! My bad... But I do appreciate learning the trick about "site:apug.org" -- that's pretty cool.
