There is another Travelodge (just checked) at 'Tabley'. I would be staying on the Thursday night.

I have just booked at the Travelodge, Knutsford Tabley. They are currently offering rooms at £26.00 if you book now. I'll PM you Tom with my contact details.

Seeegh. No way for me to get there that time, even I have so many reasons to be there. I will make here in Toronto nice day for me, something special, when you all gather together.

I'll be flying into Manchester from Norwich on the Friday morning, and returning in the evening.

I too will be flying into Manchester in the morning and returning in the evening. It would make sense for us to share a taxi to the Ilford factory if our flight times are similar.

And anyone else coming by this route could be included too.

I arrive at Manchester at 08:05 and leave at 20:10

My arrival time at Manchester is 08:20, and my departure is at 19:25 so we could share a taxi, at least in the morning.

Sounds good. There's only 35 minutes difference in the evening flight too so a shared taxi could be an option then as well.

If it's a nice evening though, I may consider walking back to the airport as there is plenty of time.

I am now booked at the Gardens Hotel in Manchester. Arrival on Thursday, noon-ish, departure Sunday morning.
So, what to do/see/eat in Manchester?
Is John Rylands Library open after renovation yet? I have also been recommended the Imperial War Museum North, and the Museum of Science and Industry. Hit me with suggestions on how to spend Thursday afternoon and Saturday in Manchester. Also your opinoins on where to eat something and where to have a pint in the evening.

Does anyone know how long it takes from the airport to Ilford, please?

It can't be long, it's only a few miles. PM me a few days before, You can probably share a taxi with Tom Kershaw and myself.

Magnus, I would definitely recommend the museum of Science and Industry. They allow the use of cameras with tripods and they don't charge for entry or for the using the tripod. I'm a particular fan of the steam engines

As to bars and restaurants, you need to tell me what you are looking for as there is a wide variety in Manchester. Are you after traditional English pubs with proper English Ales, Belgium style bars or more modern "trendy" places? Food wise there's everything from take away kebabs to pretty fancy restaurants. If you give let us know what you like I might be able to help.

you know...always seeing this thread and knowing many of us, because of where we live, can't make the tour...I was thinking; Can anyone remember the show on saturdays back in the 50's called Industry on Parade? It focused on a given industry and their product and showed exactly how the product was made. Wouldn't it be great for Ilford to put together a film of how their products are developed and made...of course leaving out any top secret stuff, but enough info for the interested to see and enjoy.

just a thought....

Sweet! Tripod is in!
Who doesn't like steam engines? I read on a website that I can't find right now, that they are running the engines on the first Sunday of every month. 17:th = 3:rd Sunday. Bummer.

I like traditional pubs, a variety of local ales and beers, fish and seafood (but I do eat meat as well), and Indian cuisine. Not too swanky, and not too trendy. It will be a mini-vacation so I'm prepared to shell out a reasonable amount, say up to 30-35£ for a good meal, but that is definately the top.

They would have to shoot it in the dark!

As far as I'm aware (and I may be wrong), they fire up the steam engines most days. Just don't get there too early as they don't really start running until a few hours after they open.

As to bars well near Piccadilly Gardens there is:

  • Bar Fringe in Swan Street - a bar selling English and Belgian beers as well as the ubiquitous larger.
  • The Bull's Head - A traditional pub opposite Piccadilly railway station that has good real ale and a pleasant atmosphere

Near G-Mex which is two stops down the line on the Metro:

  • The Pevril on the Peak - a really old fashioned pub that you have to see to believe. A great Selection of beers
  • The Briton's Protection, which is near The Pevril on the Peak, another old fashioned pub with a good selection of ales and an even more extensive selection of Whisky.
  • Cask, which is opposite the Museum of Science and Industry is another bar that sells a wide selection of beer, including Belgium and German beers in bottles.

As to restaurants. Well the obvious one to try is Live Bait in Albert Square. I recommend going here at lunch time an trying one of their offers as you'll save a lot of money, especially if you forgo the alcohol and opt for a pot of tea

If you fancy a Indian meal you might want to pop on a bus down to Rusholme to visit the curry mile which is quite an experience.

If you fancy a great Chinese visit China Town and the Yang Sing. One of the best Chinese meals I've ever had. Not cheap though. Pearl City is pretty good as well although not really in the Yang Sing's league.

I'm sure you can find more information about these places with a simple google search. However, if you want any more information then simply reply to this thread or PM me.
