Ilford HP5

Hi,

I'm about to buy 20 or 30 rolls of Ilford HP5 plus 135-36.
I haven't purchased any in about a year, is the stuff still good
or have they started diluting the emulsion with water?

No. Ilford have raised the price enough that they were able to avoid that particular cost cutting measure.

What would it look like if they did dilute the emulsion? Would the tonal range not be as long? thinner negs?

I just bought a box of sheet film and it's fine. Used to use Delta 400, but they don't make the sheets any more. I think the HP5+ actually does better than the T-grain films for pushing development to N+1 or N+2.

You should consider buying HP-5 in 100-ft. rolls. Costs around $28, which yields 17 36-exposure rolls, more or less. And with a long roll, you can always roll yourself a short length if that's all you need.

Anyway, this is a great film; i have been using it for years, developing in Rodinal. But in Ilford's Microphen, it pushes to a good ASA 3200.

Great emulsion. In Aculux 2 I produced the finest shots of my kids to date. On polywarmtone the shots glowed with fine but crisp grain and a lovely depth. The filmhas superb edge sharpness. LOVE IT.

HP5 is the only film I've used in my two Leica M6's in nearly three years. I did shoot one roll of PanF in 2003. It was such a shock to the camera, the meter quit working.

Great film. I like it better than Tri-X.

You better stock up on the Arista 400. From what I have been told and have read, Ilford will no longer be selling film to second party retailers for cutting and rebranding. That is what the change to the rebranded Foma products at Freestyle is all about.

The only Ilford available in the future will carry the ilford branding and will be selling at an increased price, which does not bother me because I would rather pay a little more and keep the film available.
