I've made these exposures as carefully as I could and eliminated as many variables as I realistically could. While it is not scientific, and certainly not up to ISO or probably manufacturer standards, it is as accurate as I can make it with what I have available to me, and certainly accurate enough that I thought it would be share-worthy.

Adrian - I’d also like to add my appreciation for not only your having run these tests, but also sharing them so comprehensively with the community.

Doing the testing and providing the information for your clients is well beyond what many commercial organizations are doing - sharing the information for the benefit of this larger community is very generous of your time and I believe that I speak for many here when I express deep appreciation for your work and your openness to share it so fully.

thanks. I just hope people find it useful. Part of doing this is to just make it a really simple and straightforward matter. All too often people on the internet take a position, or spout off stuff as if it’s gospel with nothing else to back it up. Let’s just cut through the noise. These are actual numbers gathered in a pretty simple and straightforward way that most anybody with a camera and grey card can replicate and get pretty close without much effort if they want to double check or do their own sanity check. Gotta start from somewhere.

Adrian, just wanna let you know.......all of your h+d work is very, very appreciated! I've tried some of your recipes with my Jobo. For scanning on my Frontier they look very good (I guess, because I can tame the highlights pretty good, while retain good shadow detail) ....for my darkroom work they are a little bit on the highside, depending on the film... means highlights need some more work (burn, especially Tmax 400). But nevermind.... a very good dev documentation from different brands!

Thank you. Many people that send film in to my lab have a tendency to under expose, so I've standardized on ISO contrast as my AIM. That gives me as much toe speed as possible while still maintaining a generally manageable amount of density for the highlights. If you want a bit less contrast (the green zone reference line) you can generally shorten the development time in 30 second increments (for times 7:30 or less) until you're happy with it, but be prepared to add exposure. For example, going from 7:30 to 7:00 is probably OK, but trimming another 30 seconds off to 6:30 will mean adding at least a third of a stop, if not 2/3 of a stop. Trimming another 30 seconds to go to 6:00 means adding at least another 1/3 of a stop for a total of 2/3 to a full stop extra exposure over the EI I indicated on the chart.

The goal was to give a reasonable time with a known development system that would be relatively constant across machines. You should be able to run a roll with that time and temperature and get reasonably reliable results. From there, you can subtract or add time in small increments to better suit what you want.

Dunno. I exposed up to zone 11, which is ~1.8 above film base plus fog. That means you can expose it at 250 (instead of 500) which would make the zone 11 the new zone 10 and give you an extra stop of shadow detail. 1.8 density isn't very high.... I'd imagine you can probably give it another couple stops at least before it starts to shoulder over, though I just don't make it a habit to expose HP5+ down in the EI 64-125 range. I prefer TMAX 100 or FP4 for that.

yeah, I agree. I rate HP5+ at box speed and am pleased with the results. I guess I was just kinda curious....thanks again.
