ilford film magenta stain

good morning

i was doing a film test per the methoud described by steve simmons of view camera and noticed that the undeveloped part of the fim had a magenta color to it . does this affect density?
i know that it is recomended to extend fix time for this type of film so i am fixing for 6m30s now should i fix longer ? i wash for 10 min and am trying out xtol developer.

Does it affect density? Yes. Does it mean it won't print well? No.

"undeveloped"? I think the test is to develop an UNEXPOSED sheet per usual standards then use that to find the Base+Fog printing exposure required for maximum black.

The magenta stain is likely to be residual antihalation dyes left in the film. Pre-soak and fresh fixer (for sufficient time) followed by HCA are the usual remedies.

I second the underfixed idea. Additional fixing should clear the stains and make the neg look a whole lot better.

6 1/2 minutes is ample fix time for t-grain films providing fixer is at correct strength. The pink/magenta colour is usually the result of insufficient washing.
If you have washed film in cold running water, then it can take an age to wash out the residual dyes. Use water at 20-25degC for the wash.

I will third the under fixed comment, and agree that 6:30 minutes is more than enough time to clear any unexposed silver halides (assuming the fix is the correct concentration). I have also found that a good wash (approx 5:00 minutes) in hypo clearing agent (HCA) or PermaWash will clear most of the pink/magenta base color.

I have noticed more of this base color in 35mm than in 4x5. I both cases the base color adds density but does "print".

Yeah, my TMax clears after 2.5 minutes in HC110 Dil 'B' so I generally fix for 5.5 minutes. Want the negs archival but I don't want to run the risk of bleaching do to overfixing.
