Ilford FB Classic and FB Cooltone: first impressions

Thank you Michael second pass is better than nothing.

Just an update. I ordered 50 shts of 11x14 Classic after trying a trial run of 8x10. I always felt MGIV was too generic, too cool, and not the sharpest. Classic is an improvement. One surprise not reported frequently is dry down is absolutely minimal.

In an earlier post I mentioned concern with shelf life. Under recommended storage conditions Ilford reports three years.

Got through 4 boxes of Classic, love it. Put an order in before Christmas but still waiting as it's not available in the UK and nobody seems to no why. Please Ilford let me have the paper I've paid for.
Cheers J.

I'm really enjoying both new papers.
I love the even speed across the grades, really nice.
Cool tone has never been my thing but I found a neg that works nicely with it and it could grow on me.
Hooray for Ilford.

The review posted at the online darkroom and referenced in the first post and throughout the thread seems to no longer exist.

Does anybody have any kind of review of Ilford Cool Tone?

There is an entire decade between the last two posts. "Reviews" would have been a long time ago. Quite a few people, including myself, have used plenty of Cooltone. It's a fine product if you are in fact seeking a cooler image tone, and certainly a big improvement over MGIV.

The wayback machine has a snapshot of the site: https://web.archive.org/web/2015042.../01/ilford-fb-classic-and-cooltone-first.html
The site's 2022 snapshot shows a domain notice, so sometime before that it was left out of maintenance.

All content copyright of Bruce Robbins (OP), given that the site is unfortunately not live and for posterity here I copy pasted the content from the snapshot above (Mods please edit if unappropiate):

Yes, both MG Cooltone and MG Classic have a little more shine in the glossy surface version than MGWT, MGIV FB, and Harman Fineprint. The nature of what is apparently a different gelatin overcoat necessitates that you immerse these newer papers quickly and thoroughly in their respective trays solutions, or you might end up with visibly uneven development of untextured highlights like skies. But then, if done properly, you also get significantly better highlight gradation and detail than with previous MGIV.

The change in density with dry-down is significant, just like with MGWT and most other FB papers. Only Galerie Graded had minor dry-down shift. Full DMax with any of these papers requires supplemental toning after dev and fixing.

Prest_400 - thank you. It is very helpful to get initial impression from when the paper was just new. I’m new to darkroom and so have no frame of reference when it is compared with other papers.
