I see you've only got a few posts, welcome to the forum.

Not confusing but try the APUG search Google version and you'll find lots of info on this subject.

Bottom line, both films and both developers can address your concerns nicely.

There is no x vs y. Most films are subtlely different and/or capable enough that you should just find something and use it.

I've shot Tmax 400 (the new TMY-2 version) a lot in 35mm and developed in both D-76 1+1 and Tmax 1+7 (I use 1+7 instead of the standard 1+4 because the Dev times are very short with the 1+4 dilution, and the results are very beautiful and saves money on chemicals). I really like them both. I have used D-76 a lot more and am just now exploring Tmax Developer with this film. I think the highlights are softer in D-76 but Tmax produces better tonal seperation in light tones if you are careful not to overdevelop or over expose.

Both film and developer are very good, but I think that T-Max developer was made for the T-Max films.

A matter of personal taste. I like Delta 400 at EI 200 in Perceptol or EI 400 in D-76 more than T-Max 400. Buy five rolls of each and experiment a bit, and you'll see what seems worth pursuing further.

I agree with experimenting - keep the developers you like and try both films. TMY2 is my film of choice for just about everything (developed in Rodinal).

One thing that is worth considering - TMY2 has relatively less blue sensitivity. I find that with no filter, it approaches other films with a yellow filter. If light is getting lower, but I still want to get the "yellow effect", then I can shoot with a higher shutter speed (as I can get by without the filter).

That's a very useful benefit. Is it also the case that with a yellow filter and a small loss in shutter/aperture die to filter factor that TMY-2 will produce an even greater yellow effect?
