Hello,

Sorry if this has been discussed previously but is it possible to preorder certain film types to be cut into sizes not usually available with Ilford ?

I'd thought of a project that would require a fast stock (the 3200 might even need a push) - I'd really like to give it a crack in 8x10

Minimum quantity ? extra cost ?

Are there any other fast options ? Fuji 1600 ?

I'll get a meter reading of what I'm after tomorrow night but I know for sure it would require much more than say a 400ASA stock

Any help appreciated - cheers,
Nick

Simon Galley has raised this possibility. I don't know if there's been any decision.

What is it you are photographing, and are you enlarging or contact printing? You might be able to get the speed you're after with one of the available 400 speed films and a developer like Microphen, Acufine, or RAF pyro-metol. I use the latter two with TXP for a one-stop push, maybe a bit more in RAF, but the result is grainier, though that's okay for contact prints. If you are doing night photography under high-contrast conditions (like street lights), XP-1 might be a good option. I've gotten about two stops of real speed increase with Tri-X and XP-1, but the contrast was lower than I wanted.

Incident reading of the light source at the approx distance to a persons face gives 4~5.5 EV - 2~8 seconds f8 @3200 depending on where the bellows are - I could cope with 1/2 sec exposures so I'd push it ...

It is indeed night photography, and the surroundings would be near on lit by stray light - moon, stars, reflections of the source etc... that I'm assuming wouldn't register so much compared to the source itself, so yes if my logic is correct its hi-con

Contact printing in Pt/Pd so grain would almost be interesting  - a punchy neg never hurts with this process, so the Pyro sounds interesting

I dont need any more than say 50 sheets for what I'm thinking but could easily contrive other uses for more if the minimum order were higher - I have found Simon here in a search so I'll contact him directly (or otherwise?) - prob wait until the new year madness has subsided, in the meantime I'll give it a go in MF 6x7 and have a look see

thanks David,
Nick

I think the fastest film "available" in 8x10 is TMY-2. How available it really is is an open question, but certainly more available than Delta 3200 or NP1600. I've been very encouraged by the pushability of TMY-2 in 35mm, and might prefer it to even Delta 3200.

For Pt/Pd RAF would probably work nicely, and the grain won't be an issue. I use it as a high-speed counterpart to ABC pyro for negs to be contact printed on Azo or albumen, since the look is similar. Scratch the XP-1 idea--I don't think it will give you enough density for Pt/Pd. I've posted the RAF formula here--

(there was a url link here which no longer exists)

I've only used it with TXP. I suspect you'll get a little more speed out of TMY or HP-5+, but I prefer the look of TXP.

Have you considered pre (or post) flashing your film? If you flash to give a .02 to .03 density level above base fog, that might give you some additional latitude.

Mark - R3 is available in 8x10 ??? I do have a roll here in 120, but not a proper developer required for the faster speeds

Richard - flashing is certainly not going to help make a good Pt/Pd neg - if I understand it correctly it lowers contrast (?)

Guillaume - why isn't it possible ? With enough time and money... Are the costs just waaay too prohibitive for some reason ?

Nick, I bought the film and the RHS high speed developer from : Dead Link Removed You can download the data sheet from here: Dead Link Removed

Nick,
I have used flashing to give the film an overall exposure above threshold. This enables you to record detail in shadow areas which would otherwise have none. I think any change in contrast would be minimal and never had to take that into account when making enlargements. When measuring highlight density the percent exposure change is minimal.

I don't recall the reason, but it might need to be re-engineered to work with the sheet film base. I know that was an issue with bringing Pan-F back in sheet sizes.

R3! great stuff - sold !

thanks everyone,
Nick
