Incidentally, Process Supplies in London have a vast quantity of Fuji duping film in 70mm. All out of date, but only a few pounds a 30m roll. I can't find it on their site, but I'm sure they still have plenty.

Not a chance for the full 15 foot reels. Maybe if they make a short reel.

There are/were various aerial films in 70mm. Agfa used to list some interesting stuff.

Have seen 70mm backs for the Hasselblad but as I was unaware film was still available have not botherd to purchase one.
My take being that as I would not want to wait till the whole film was exposed before developing I would be inclined to open the back and cut off the exposed section for dev'ing as I wanted, as I do not have a back at present I will have to investigate the practicalities of this but am working on the assumtion that if a roll of film can be loaded it can be unloaded part way through.
My thinking is that this could be an alternative to 120 given the cost and technicalities of the paper backing which will be an ongoing issue that is not going to get any cheaper to overcome.
At this point I cannot commit to an order but am interested in the idea and as it seems a way of future proofing the hasselblad without going to a d.....l back will investigate its practicalities.

The film runs from cassette to cassette, in a similar fashion to the old Agfa Rapid 35mm cameras, if anyone remembers that. So cutting and rethreading is straightforward. Or, as you're using bulk loading, remember, use a shorter length.

I am the same, I saw a couple of 70mm backs in the past which I let pass by. Hopefully a Bronica one surfaces up at some point.

This said having 70mm format available would be a god send for re-spooling for vintage cameras and odd formats. I had looked for 70mm in the past without success, so I'd be frilled to get hold of some.

I am still investigating how I would process it. I sent an email to Hewes to get the dimensions of their reel. I wonder whether I could use a jobo print tank to that effect.

Martin thanks for that, I have often cut and rethreaded 35mm when I have wanted the negs quickly so this seems a deffinate goer, now to find cost of back.

I bought 3 reels just this year from Sullins, for a bit more than $8 each.

They suggested to not buy a tank b/c of weight and cost, rather to try a 5-gallon Igloo drink cooler! I couldn't imagine sloshing 5 gallons around like a daylight tank, so bought the 2-gallon version. It will hold 2 reels, but is a smidge too small to hold 3 reels (each reel is supposed to hold 13').

I'm nearly ready to go: Hassy back, cassettes, bulk loader, reels and "tank". I have some film (old Tri-X), but I want to get my back CLA'd first b/c I don't want to run 50 shots through it then find out that I have a light leak or overlap...

Don't know about your back but usually you can fire some frames off. Take the back off in the darkroom. Cut the film and remove the take up can. Then process the exposed film.

70mm reel/tank

rolland elliot has a jobo-alternative for 125 usd for use on jobo machines(cpa2/cpp)- a good investment.
george s. pearl of atlanta( go to panphoto.com forum) offers a similar one. both have no film-reel-loader like jobo.
the easiest way is buying the still existing 2517-reel from jobo(maybe they are out of stock at jobo germany) 2517=220-lenght(185cm). loading in 2500 tanks or testdrum(for prints 10x40cm). buy jobo cpa2 or cpp-rotating machines. high-quality-development with waterbath of you use hot-processes. i used 500ml-bottles but replenished. bought 5 lt- solution.
one can easily push/pull films, also colornegative. agfa avicolor are built to do this. you dont need b+w anymore when using x100 or x400. also ideal for scanning, have no mask.
i have older ilford xp-2 400 -DP(2x 70mm/30m) left. maybe will use for special developments. dont know which one is best. i use 70mm in roundshot 65/70/220. 120 is also possible.

It's not even 70mm, it's 65, so you couldn't use it even if you could find a movie lab to process it for you.

I've heard a few people mention they would like to buy 70mm backs. I have three Hassy ones sitting around (they take perforated film, but I believe can be modified for unperf. too if you just remove or sand down the teeth on the roller; I even have a Mamiya that runs unperf with the perforated roller still in), so send me a PM and make me an offer!

Does anyone know of any former cassette suppliers other than Linhof? I want to get in touch with everyone who made the cassettes to see if we can't just get a new run of them made, or find a new company to make them.

Hewes - 70mm reel to fit Jobo tank 2500 series

Dear all,

I have been in contact with Hewes with regards to fitting their reel into a jobo tank.

Nigel from Hewes, got back to me with the following information ; they are happy to run a small run of 50 units of 70mm reels to fit the jobo tank 2500 series at £30 + 17.5%VAT per unit.

I'd be game for a reel, is there enough of us for a production run?

In contrast to type 120 or 220 machinery, I expect each manufacturer to still have 70mm slitters, perforators and signing machines at the plant.

The issue is whether any special conversion and offering to the market is profitable.

If it's like the Jobo 70mm reel it's only 5 feet I think. Not much more then 220 for sure. So you'd need three reels for each 70mm load. That means cutting rolls up .

Why not look at the X-ray reels? Sure they're plastic but less then $10 usually.

Hewes is confirming that the length would be around the same as a 220 film, i.e. approx 76".

For my purpose, that is fine.

That's wonderful news, since the developing is a problem that needs to be solved. If there were a 70mm back for my Koni-Omega, I would do this in a heartbeat.

For a commercial operation, a minimum order of 50, and charging £30 a piece, they are giving them away. That is a very good deal, that you would be foolish to pass up on

In a thread about an attempt to get some usable 70 mm film from somewhere, now that it has almost disappeared completely, you are surprised that there isn't a rush on reels to proces the stuff on?


(P.S. I have a reel, and tank. And all the rest. Just no usable 70 mm film.
I too would have liked to see a modern film rather than FP4 and HP5.)

What will the physical size of a Hewes 70mm reel be?
Those of us who aren't into designer processing equipment need to determine if the reel will fit our low-tech tanks. Or, if necessary, to make a tank to fit...

Hello,

I bought a couple of reels and tanks (stainless) a couple of years ago - rather pricey as I recall. I have not used them yet, and I forget just what the maximum length of film is that they hold, but the are about 8 inches in diameter IIRC. I also have a roll of 70mm that I got from J&C which must be out of date by now, but not my much. I will use it, but probably not until summer 2009. So, I am not in the market for a new Hewes reel, but I think their price is very good. I would be interested in some fresh film.
