DRP and DRGM are just indicators that parts of a product are protected on their intellectual property. That the respective institution was a german imperial one, gives a certain hint at the period of installment of protection.

Pre-War Automat. K3A? The lack of a bayonet for filters on the viewing/upper lens, and the gray paint in the center rings of the shutter and aperture dials. Also no sports finder window on the focusing hood.

DRG and DRGM are trademark/patent marks, as noted. Deutsches Reich... By 1949, the mark was changed to DBG and DBGM, Deutsch Bundes. Germany changed its official title after WWII from Reich to Bundes... I'll let a real German speaker explain the difference in the two words.

The first Rolleiflex Automat didn't have the protection cover for the shutter release button, but it was added a couple of months later. In 1939 the viewing lens also got a bayonet. So I would date this particular camera to 1938. The looks like it has been used, but the owner(s) took good care of it.

His book is good. Of course, Franke & Heidecke didn't call the cameras "type 1, type 2" and so on, especially not when only small changes were made, but it's interesting information for collectors and sometimes for users as all types sometimes can't use the same accessories, for example. For close-ups this camera needs the Proxar sets with one Proxar with bayonet and one push-on. It can also use the earlier sets with two 28,5 mm push-on Proxars.

I almost forgot that I have this camera on my avatar. It's in near mint condition. I also have the 1939 model in mint condition.

For more in depth information there are the "Rollei Report" books 1 and 2 (pre and post war Rolleis TLRs) by the Rollei engineer Claus Prochnow, but they are in German. They also include the accessories. The later books are for the Rollei 35, SLRs and the 2,8GX. Prochnow also wrote the Voigtländer Report books before he died.
