Ideas for a Diy shutter

Hey People,

I build this 11x14ish Ulf Camera. Im Shooting with ra4 paper reversed. I went out yesterday to test it out i quickly realised that i need a good shutter for it. I thought the low sensitivity of the paper would be enough to slow down exposures down to seconds. Appearently It does not and i needed something like 1/10 of a second to take a well exposed image. I tried to manually do that but the paper was totally overexposed. So does anybody have an Idea how to build a good enogh shutter for this 20cm lense?

You could put a ND filter on it, but looking at the lens, it would have to be quite big, so maybe a sheet of gel filter is available and would be a lot cheaper? I know that polarizer gel filters are relatively cheap if not ND.

Have you ever heard of a Guillotine shutter. Very simple technology. The wider the gap, the longer the exposure.

Another way is to add an ND filter for longer exposures so you don't have to have a shutter.

And yes I thought about using a guiltuine shutter, but it would be quite bulky to travel with 4 or more of these plates with holes in them. But when I fail with the other shutters. This will be my backup. And after that I will buy some neutral density.

Years ago I was given one of those monstrosities. It was too big and heavy for me to use as a lens but it was an excellent doorstop.

More seriously, my great long lens is a 900/10 Apo-Saphir. I found an industrial (without diaphragm) Compound #5 shutter, had an adapter that holds it in front of the lens made. You might want to look for a Compound #5 or an Ilex #5 to hang in front of your monstrosity.

I usually put lenses in barrel in front of shutters but the Compound's controls would be inaccessible if the lens were in front of it.

I have the same lens (Kodak version). The lens already has a shutter, but it looks to be removed on your copy. There is a large post on the back of the lens you can rotate that to open and close the blades. Perhaps some kind of servo drive to actuate it can be implemented. Also, this lens has an iris, try moving the knurled post on silver ring on the front of the shutter flange. It does not have an aperture scale, but you can measure and use area of the iris opening I guess to approximate. Good luck, a friend and I am building a 16x20 camera around this lens and it's been a challenge, but we're getting there.

Hey thanks for your reply. And i was quite dissapointed, i bought this lense knowing that it should have a shutter inside, but it was removed. no parts left. The apeture is also gone. But i experimented with taking the pictures digitally. I used a 30 inch white board on a tripod to project the image on and then photographed that. its quite stunning, and i dont need to waste ra4 paper and i get way better dynamic range, only problem is resolution. i dont have the best digital camera, so its kinda low quality but the effect it produces is stunning, im hoping to hear from your updates about yours camera.
