hello apug, hello PE..

as i am finally reaching some experience and therefore certainties in my workflow, regarding zones, exposure, development, i would like to discuss the ideal negative (tonal range) in order to match the scale of maco and foma emulsions.

so.. the question would be, 'how many zones do i ideally want to create in exposure in order to have a print (on handcoated paper) that can be considered full range?

any thought would be appreciated!

chris

When you are making your own, forget the zone system. That is why step wedges exist.

Just put a step wedge in the scene with your negative and make a contact print or an enlarged print and see where the image falls. Do this with a good paper of grade 2 and then test your paper. If film just do with your film and vary contrast.
