Iceland is a "dynamic" place, with the coastline going up and down as it pleases. It wouldn't surprise me at all if rocks that were above water 10 years ago were under water 5 years ago, and high and dry next year.

Iceland certainly is a dynamic place. It sits atop the Mid Atlantic Ridge and is constantly growing as the new continental crust forms and the island itself splits generally moving east and west. It is very volcanically active with a tremendous number of geysers. In fact, the geyser named Geyser is on the island. The only place in the world to have more geysers I believe is Yellowstone National Park which sits on top of a huge caldera.

The titles on Josef´s site are not the location, but rather the word for North, South, East, West. The location of those rocks is somewhere around the location of the town of Vik. Its right off the side of the road. The black line in the distance varys thickness as you drive.

Rich: The Mid Atlantic Ridge once was a divergent plate boundary when the super continent Pangea broke apart ca. 200 million years ago (you can see how the coastlines of the Eastern US / Canada and Marocco fit together like a jigsaw puzzle). Today, however, it is oceanic crust that is forming there. Thanks, for correcting my error. Geologist, or not (and it is an error that I should have not made), I have not been practicing for some time and you are correct, I should have said oceanic material is forming and continuing to build along the length of the Mid Atlantic Ridge and continues to build Iceland. And of course, subduction takes place along trenches and frequently associated with Back Arc Basins and Island Arcs such as the Aleutians and Japan. Then of course we have places like where South America ran over a trench forming the Andes and India running over Asia to form the Himalayas..... Can't have a constantly expanding earth now can we?

...hope you didn't mind the correction, Rich. BTW, I should have said also, for the sake of completeness, that plutonic (as opposed to volcanic) activity above subduction zones really generates a lot of continental crust. If you look at a geologic map of California, for example, you see a lot of red colors indicating granitoid rocks in the Sierra Nevada - reminescent of a once huge crustal magma chamber that was around during the Cretaceous. This material is now of course part of the North American continent.

Anyway, I am getting carried away and tend to forget that this a photography forum ... I better shut up now and get back to work ;-)

Bill, after seeing reality on the cost it appears Michael and Paulas workshop in Iceland is quite the bargain. Working with them and getting the benefit of their experience is priceless.

I have seen a number of their iceland prints and they are some of the most powerful images I have seen. A lot to be said when viewing the work of the masters and both of them qualify.

Either way, your trip or theirs it would be an enjoyable time and something to look forward to.

I'm getting ready to post a proposed schedule and ballpark pricing for a trip and would like to send out a mailing to all that have expressed interest. I was able to get some of your addresses via APUG, but not all.

How about all with a serious interest, or that just want to be kept informed go HERE to sign up for newsletters. I should be making a mailing in the next week. I've been crunching numbers and it looks like we could do this for 10 days in-country for 2,300 to 3,000 per person depending upon how many go. Proposed dates will be in late March. April will cost up to 500.00 more in airfare. All of this is also based upon US participants getting themselves to Minneapolis for departure. Most lodging will include breakfast, but you will be responsible for all other meals. Basically cost will include airfare from US, transportation and lodging. No workshop instruction, no critiques of work, just serious scouting and shooting.

I think I would go by ferry, but not so sure about the car. My car isn't exactly ideal for off-road driving, which would certainly be tempting in Iceland. I might rent a Landrover there?

I had a Land Cruiser there a couple of times and you are correct in that it is tempting to go off road! This time I am looking at perhaps a Ford Transit depending upon how many go. If a smaller group it may be better to get into a large 4WD. I have had smaller cars there however and aside from extreme off-road stuff, I didn't feel too limited. Also, due to the time of year we are going, a lot of the F roads will still be closed making the interior doubtful. There should still be snow in the lower elevations in some places as well.

The main problem with my car is traction. While I think the SAAB 900S is a great car, it needs a little rev before it starts pulling. The older carburettor model was better in that regard, with lots of torque from dead idle. Last winter I drove the car down to the house, and had to wait a week before I could get it back up the hill. I was still thinking of the old one...

As a guy who's off to Iceland himself on 25th of this month, if anyone is thinking of renting an off-tarmac capable vehicle in Iceland, bear in mind that these things are extremely expensive by comparison to any other country you might know. A Land-Rover Defender might cost up to say £2000 per week and even a much less capable vehicle like a Vitara or RAV 4 will cost in the range £700-£1000 per week.

At these rates you might assume that your contract will cover you for driving on the unsurfaced roads, but that isn't always so on the t&c's I looked at and it is eeven more common to hold the renter responsible for any problems to tyres and whilst crossing fords (which appears pretty inevitable once you leave the tarmac.

Read the stuff carefully.

Iceland Group Dates - Spring, 2007

Looking like April 17 - 27, 2007

More details will be made soon to all who signed-on for them.
The trip is being set-up to include cost of airfare from Minneapolis (option of Baltimore as well), van hire and gasoline, private room each night and breakfast each day. All other food and expenses will be up to each participant. Group size for the one vehicle is limited to 8 with several spaces already taken. Those coming from other points in the world will be responsible for travel to and from Keflavik Airport outside Reykjavik. Cost will be adjusted to reflect this.

As was stated earlier in this thread, this is cooperative group shooting expedition, not a workshop.

Sounds like a blast. I have been many times but somehow haven't yet done it as a proper photo excursion with actual equipment. I would love to go with but chances are it will be right in the middle of a semester when I am teaching two classes.

Let me just say that Iceland in the dead of winter is also amazing, the light is very special, with the sun very low to the horizon. And f course there are the northern lights, which can sometimes even be appreciated from an outdoor spa such as Bláa Lónið. There are almost zero tourists in winter and the prices are consequently much lower. With all the Christmastime traditions of Iceland, the nightly fireworks to chase away the darkness, the looong sunsets, I found it to be a very special time to visit. Of course I liked it in summer as well but it has become hideously expensive now, in the high season.

It will run around 2100 from Europe.

I am making a winter run alone this year to square things away. Perhaps that is a trip I will offer in the future. It's snowing there now!

Hi Bill,

What would expect for weather in Iceland toward the end of October. Only a few weeks ago Buffalo, NY got 2 feet of snow and didn't Michigan get some as well. :rolleyes:
