Film is a mature tech, while digital is still improving.

Digital technology is moving so fast that it is constantly out dating the hardware so that this years cutting edge cameras in a couple of years will be a joke, you only have to look at the prices of second hand top of the range pro DSLRs compared with what they cost new a couple of years ago.

This is just speculation of course, but Hasslelblad and Leica feels a great need to go digital. I wonder if both camera manufacturers are making a wrong decision? Once these top end cameras go digital, they become just another consumer commodity that's disposable and not worthy of cherishing. What's your take?

Wow, I can get one for under $10,000! Or, I could get the 2 bdrm, 2 bath mobile home we live in w/ central A/C, Florida room, etc that's 10 minutes from the beach for under $10,000, which is what we did. Hmmm, let me think about this.....camera, home, camera, home. I can't seem to make up my mind here. I wonder what the 'ol lady would say if I told her I'd sold the place, but bought a nice digital camera?

Seriously, if they can discount these things that much and STILL make money (no one thinks they're taking a loss, right?), you have to wonder what it actually costs them to make the stuff? Pretty nifty markups I'll bet.

You may all have it wrong. The camera technology (used in both film and digital) is mature. It is the sensor technology that is moving so fast that it is obsoleting things quickly. Also, the current sensor prices are dropping so fast that they have to do something to move older and more expensive stock.

At least that is my guess. The same thing happened a few years ago. They had to change backs to account for the new sensor formats and image density, and also the new range of speeds.

Why shouldn't someone be passionate about Photoshop and inkjet printing? It is just another medium, but not one you prefer.

A new 503CW, A12 and 80CFE was over $10000 new a few years ago so it's got nothing to do with it being digital or not.

By the way, I bought a 501CM kit for £1050 5 years ago. I sold a 501CM kit for £1030 5 weeks ago. Yet someone paid over £5000 for it new back in 1998 (serial number was from 1998). Couldn't be too pleased when they traded that in. If I recall correctly the V price list was up till last year and an A12 back was £750, ie over $1000, a 80CFE was £3500 and a 50CFE something like that. In fact what was remarkable about the Hasselblad lens prices was they were all pretty much £3500.

You may be correct regarding Hasselblad, I don't really know if they still make a film camera but Leica certainly does. Unless things have changed lately Leica is making at least three film cameras including one made for B&W. I can guarantee that they will not continue to do so if people, who have the money, don't buy them....Regards

More seriously, I suspect they're hoping to boost demand for the lenses, which probably have a higher profit margin. Who knows?

made for black and white? Um -- all their film cameras can shoot b/w just fine. I have not seen any sales figures for their film cameras, but I suspect it is not large. What they're selling now sounds more like toys for the few folks who want to shoot film and don't want to buy used because, really, their most recent offering is virtually an M3 -- so why not just buy an M3?

Whenever some of my friends start talking about sensor cleaning, I tell them I just replace my sensor every time I take a photograph.

Before Hasselblad discontinued the 200 series 10 years ago there were nice rebates and they sold a 203FE and the lenses for half the original price. Maybe we will see the H5D discontinued soon?
