I love Rollei Retro 100 .. want similar 400ASA BW...

Hi,

Returned to analog photography after almost 30 years.. In those days
Tri-X and D76 was the stuff I used. Now enjoying photography again,
I stumble upon Rollei Retro 100 (APX 100) which i L-O-V-E.. the tonality,
fine grain and old school look..

But what to use for high speed work..? I have used a few rolls of Tri-X
which looks fine... but it does not give me the immediate satisfaction that
the Retro 100 did.. I would love an 400 ASA film with tonality and fine grain
with some character..

Is there a film like that out there..?

Would appreciate some advice!

Horses for courses, as they say but I really prefer Tmax 400(TMY-2) over older, sometimes murky ISO 400 films, especialy in 120.

Perhaps the new Adox Pan 400 would be worth trying, it should be available in a month or two.

Hmmm...Since Rollei Retro 100/APX 100 and APX 400 are "relatives" maybe that would be the way to go to get a similar look..

For those with experience of APX 400.. what were your experience? Did you like it/use it when it still was being made..?

Would be so nice to have the APX100 look also in 400ASA, even though the grain, most probably, would be slightly more accentuated..

As much I as liked APX 100, APX 400 just didn't cut it and showed it's age far more. Do try the Kodak TMY-2 or even a chromogenic like XP2 Super or Kodak BW 400CN rated at ISO200.

I did not know that Rollie 100 was APX 100. Well, now I know what to replace it with when my 100ft roll runs out!

Rollei 100 and APX 100 are discontinued long since and the stock you see on the shelves is new old stock. It's running out very fast so you better stock up while it's still available.

I've used Fuji Neopan 400 as my 400 ASA film. It goes nicely together with Rollei 100 in my opinion. I mostly use Rodinal for both films.

I did not like APX-400 all that much when I tried it. Something just seemed "off" about it compared to Kodak and Ilford 400 films. It just seemed bland to me, for some reason. I only shot about 20 rolls of 35mm, however, and though I did do development tests, I only ever tried it with one developer: D-76 1:1.

I would try it to see if you like it, and I would also try T-Max 400 and Delta 400, as well as Rollei IR400 unfiltered, if you can afford to use it regularly.

APX-400 was the weak link in Agfa's B&W film range, when they improved AP25 & AP100 and introduced APX25 & APX100 they left the older AP400 emulsion, later they renamed it.

It sounds like Mirko's team will be doing the upgrading that Agfa should have done themselves years ago. so we may well get a far better film.

Hmm.. Thank you all for your inputs! T-Max seems to be a film to try as well as Delta 400.

I'll order a few rolls and try them out!

Based on what you've said you like, I'd also suggest TMax400 ... OR, give HP5+ a whirl.
