I don't understand this recent fascination with the aperture blades being round. If you want big bokeh or as much OOF are as possible are you not going to shoot wide open? Wide open there is no aperture blades, right? Am I missing something?

Not always. I might shoot a portrait at F-8. Then the OOF quality still comes into play. I might not always want the amount of softness that wide open would give.
