A local company asked for pictures of oak trees for a competition so I sent in one of mine: (there was a url link here which no longer exists)

I have just received an e-mail advising me that mine was the winner.

There is a prize which is a bit unusual compared to the usual prizes.

The company involved runs guided 'tree climbing adventures' and my prize is for me and someone else (probably my son) to climb to the top of an oak tree in a local park this Sunday.

Here is the company's details: http://www.goodleaf.co.uk/

It looks like fun!

Great tree and it does look like fun. Congratulations.

Congratulations, as the other poster said, it does look like fun....

WOW - Congrats to you! I used to love tree climbing and that is a beaut. What a gorgeous view you will have up there of the marshes. Looks like fun and I am sure you will have a blast.

Sounds like fun. Way to go.

That's great Steve good for you, have fun with the climb.

So the winner gets to be "up a tree"? Yikes! :D Congratulations on your win!

I will have to take my Olympus XA up to the top for some pictures. I don't think I will be allowed to carry my RB67 with me!

Congratulations Steve! (You just pre-empted my suggestion!)

Congrats! Hope you both enjoy the climb tomorrow & get some good pictures too.

Congrats Steve!

Instead of being up the creek, he will be up the tree!:tongue::tongue::tongue:

Well that was fun!

I only got about half way as it was more of a rope climbing excercise than tree climbing.
There was a rope over a pulley at the top of the tree. One end attaches to the harness and the other end passes through a sliding loop. The friction through this loop stops you slipping. Lower down there is another sliding loop which has a larger loop for your foot to go into.

A combination of pushing down with your foot and sliding the first loop up allows you to slowly climb up the rope two or three feet at a time.

I got half way, my son got a bit higher but we were both put to shame by an eight year old girl who managed to climb to the top twice whilst we were hanging around.

I'm going to have another go soon but I may need to get a bit fitter first!
