I discovered his work by accident

It's not necessarily sad. If you're an artist and you're doing what you love, recognition does not matter.

"Vegetable Photographer"...

A designation new to me.

One of my favorite lines from a lecture series that I followed for a few years (History of Photography, College of Dupage in Glen Ellen, IL, Prof. Jeff Curto) went something like this...
"Some people saw great art when they looked at Weston's work...others just saw a salad waiting to happen."

(or something like that. I, also, think that it is appropriate to mention Weston on the 105th B-Day of Brett Weston.)

very nice , now i'm interested in learning more about the man & his work . i'll have to pick up a copy of his monograph " plant kingdoms : the photographs of charles jones ( the outsider genius saved from obscurity by chance discovery ) " . his story is a fascinating one & the so called discovery of hundreds of his photographs of vegetables , fruits & flowers found in a suitcase in 1981 has helped bring his work to the masses .

I saw an exhibition of his work at Hamilton's Gallery in London back in 98/99 and bought the book as well. IIRC a whole suitcase of his pictures turned up at a flea market in South London.

If any of us are interested, we can request seed and nursery catalogs be sent to us by people in that business and we will see that plant/vegetable photographers are still active today which makes me wonder if, perhaps, he was famous during his lifetime for his work. Maybe he just died and that is why he was "forgotten". The same thing has happened to others. I am 86 years old but I assure you, the world did not begin the day I was born though sometimes I like to think so.......Regards!
