I Could Have Done That

Agreed.

But the thread is about the dissatisfaction and angst people feel about galleries and what is in them.

The "I could have done that" statement is by definition saying, my work is as good as that expensive gallery print.

If you don't care about selling your work, why would you care what is shown in galleries.

If my hobby is building birdcages, why would I care that someone is getting rich with theirs.

And the answer usually is..... human nature.
 
There is one truly fun case for caring what we find in galleries even if we don't care about selling something.

Mimicry to put something my own wall.

I succumbed to the "I could have done that" once. I was looking at some of Warhol's Polaroid Bigshot prints.

His were $5000. Mine would be $1 IF I included a free drink from Starbucks. In this case, a rose by any other name would not smell so sweet.
