Tomorrow morning, I'm sending off a recently acquired Retina IIa to Flutot's Camera Repair for a shutter and rangefinder CLA. Since she's getting all cleaned up, I though it was time for a new wardrobe, so I ordered some new skin from cameraleather.com. I've done a couple of Nikon FM's with their kits and they're really top notch. Anyway, I'm having them make the front door skin in the "Four Petals" cut. My color and material choice is the Indian Red Kid Skin (Goat), seen here on a Leica. This should look real sweet on the Retina! I'll have to get one of Gordy's wrist straps for this one.

The waiting is going to be a killer...

Nice touch, to put your APUG mug in the background...maybe you could have the logo custom printed on the leather as well? Imagine, exclusive APUG-styled cameras!

Funny as it is, we are always looking for what they call on the website "the glazed paper that is often mistaken for the real thing". The paper is much thinner than leather and it's virtually impossible to find a replacement - which we need in large quantities as there are always cameras in repair. We found something that looks like the original 'leatherette' used on the Optika from a Viennese paper dealer who was selling off old stock, but it's still not quite the same.

How long is that you have to wait anyway? How are you going to hold out?
What will you do?

Norm, natives of the state of exits and abrasion -- I'm an immigrant -- are famous for their lack of patience.

Bob, I had the idea that Carol worked on only large LF shutters. I am looking to get my F3 CLA'd too.

I don't know if Carol does focal plane shutters, it's worth a try though!

Remember--the shop is Flutot's Camera Repair. Check the website--she does vintage SLRs.

She's the best! I can't attest to Dagor77's claim about her being a good kisser, though...

Yes, I checked her website - but she does not work on vintage Nikon SLRs. Anyway, I also have a couple of Agfa folders that are in need of a CLA(C).

Thanks for the info.

If you look at her site, she specifically states she doesn't work on Nikon cameras. She did CLA's on two of my folders, a Zeiss and a Zenobia.

That "New Skin" will give your camera a real rad. look Bob. My experience with beautification took a slightly different approach and the results were , shall we say, unique.
I picked up an Argus Brick on ebay for $1.00. Couldn,t resist the sales pitch "Its older than dirt". And it was!
Got a fake gator skin purse from the local thrift store ($1.00) as my new cover and used the old leather as a template. Bit of cleaning, bit of glueing and VOILA". Brand new brick! Fun project that only cost me a few bucks.

As I wrote to our friends in our end-of-2005 letter, "Last year and this we traveled relatively little. No trips abroad of any kind, let alone to collect fish. No excursions to the west coast. <snip> Many of our recent excursions have been to take pictures in the wilds of New Jersey. For those of you who know only the densely populated and very ugly northeastern corner of the state, there's more to New Jersey than garbage dumps, chemical plants, what passes for gentrification, and slums. The Pine Barrens, in particular, are a wonderful place to visit. Pat and I have never discussed whether not traveling far makes her feel deprived. It does me, a little, but there are worse punishments than having to learn our area better."

I don't need to look at other peoples' pictures to know where I live. I don't even have to look at my own lousy pictures ...

Cheers,

Dan

The exits stay where they are, the abrasion is infectious.

Bob, I did my Yashica Electro GT in red lizard skin last year. I was looking at the red goat leather too. Looks great on a black camera body. Camera Leather's work is excellent, (I owe them a photo of the camera for their web site). I know you will enjoy the look and the CLA on the camera.

Everyone needs a Retina II. Got one recently after some experience with two different Retina Reflex's. Great cameras all, but the II is the cat's a**. What a wonderful little package. Sharp as anything, small and wonderfully well made. Got mine for $20 bucks at the PHSNE show in Waltham MA. Gotta love it!
