Today I went to a local camera store and KEH was buying used equipment. I was not able to sell them my gear and neither was another guy who apparently was cleaning out a dead relative's locker so I ended up buying his gear. (Not what I had planned but that is ADD for you). So here is my question: Did I do OK for 300 dlls? (if I did not don't laugh too hard pls). Are these worth repairing and either reselling ( to get my M6) or using (because you can never have too many cameras)?

-Leica II SN: 18393 that has an Elmar 50 mm collapsible. That one is in bad need of a CLA and probably will need shutter curtains.

-What I think is a Nikon S (SN 6097306) with a flash sync port on the Left front of the camera. This has cracked curtains and a sticky shutter so it would need a CLA as well. The lens is a Nikkor-SC 50 mm 1.4 that has some fungus on the front element.

-A Nikon M SN: M 6091918 also with cracked shutter curtains. Has a Nikkor -SC 50 mm w.5 with mild haze on the front element.
Nikon M.jpg -A Nipon Kogaku 135-35 external viewfinder
-A Nikkor-w 35mm f/3.5 with some haze
-A Nikkor QC 135mm f/3.5 that is growing some mushrooms in the rear element.

-A complete Nikon "Flash equipment" kit.

So here are some more questions:
1) Does anyone know who can service these Nikon rangefinders, replace the shutter curtains and CLA them. I have used Youxin Ye in the past for my Leica and he says that he also services these cameras.
2) Is there any hope for the lenses. Can they be restored. I shoot b/w only so I can be more forgiving with what happens to the coating. Is there anything I can try on the lenses (soap and water, vinegar, windex etc?).
3) If you were going to sell these on evilBay, would you part them out or sell them body and lens?

Thanks in advance.

I think you did well, but it will take some more investment to get these gems into working order. The cameraquest guy (www.cameraquest.com) seems to work with a good repair person for Nikon gear and he might well make you an offer for them as is.

about you

I don't know how it is with you, but I do not collect cameras, I rescue them. (Think of a sad orphan puppy). You have done an excellent job of rescuing some equipment that will be treasured by yourself or another person. You just have to nose around to see what you can find out. What did KEH tell the former owner? That would be a clue, Sherlock.

treasure

Not everybody recognizes a treasure. Vincent Van Gogh used to send lots of his paintings to his mom. She used them to fix the gaps in her fence.

i'd have grabbed those for $300 in a heartbeat.

+1

According to this list, the Leica was originally a Leica I made in 1929 that was upgraded to a II. I'd send it off to get a repair and CLA and shoot with it. Heck, the Elmar probably would have cost you what you paid for the entire bunch.

I'd send them for CLA, Youxin Ye would be my first choice. You got a good deal.

You may want to call Cam-Tek in Tampa to see if he can do the repairs you need. He's on my to-do list for some stuff I need fixed, as by all accounts he's excellent and honest. No website, just do a search for his info.

Call Sherry Krauter at Golden Touch Camera Repair. She is the Queen when it comes to all things Leica. If she does not work on Nikon she can give you some referrals. Steve Gandy at CameraQuest would be good for Nikon info as well.

I can definitely recommend Steven Gandy's (Cameraquest) repair tech. I stumbled across a Nikon M about 10 year's back that was much like yours. The shutter was gummed up and stuck, the 50/2.0 lens was so fogged you couldn't see through it and the camera had other problems too. Gandy's guy did a perfect job. The camera came back looking and operating like it was brand new. It cost me $300.00 for the overhaul. Money well spent!
